The College Interview

As volunteer Alumnus interviewer for a major Ivy League College - I’ve yet to see students appearing for interviews prepared to discuss knowledge of some department / professor they’re interested in.

Show you want to be there!! Motivation!!! Possibly ask to sit in / or talk about a class you visited and tell me what the vibe is like.

When you go to buy a car you know exactly what you’re looking for. And what to expect as options.

The same with the college interview. Talk about life. Politics. The real world.

Do you read the WSJ? The FT? - Both great for Politics. Medicine. Finance. Entertainment world.

Discuss Leadership - And the lack of it in politics. And academics. Show you’re ahead of the curve.

If you really like the school let the interviewer know and why.

What will you get out of going to the school? Give back?

What is your vision to change the world? How will you change it?

What do I know? I’m a rock producer. I look for students to rock the world.

Showtime!!!

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

As always - feel comfortable with these questions. Just be yourself and you’ll do fine.

STD questions:

Favorite Teacher / Subject / Writer / Novel - Found most compelling

Impact – book / journal / article / movie / play

Long / Short Range Goals

How do you plan to achieve your goals

Activity most appealing / rewarding

What motivates you

How do you work under pressure

Leadership responsibilities

Determine / evaluate success

What does diversity mean to you

How important is diversity in education

How do you integrate community in your life with school

Interests outside school

Colleges – What do you like about X? / Curriculum / Professors

What are you most looking forward to at X?

Give us something to write about that makes you a Lion / Lioness - in a land of Elephants.

The Interview may not count as much as it used to; however, it can highlight strengths and

energies that might make an Admissions Officer decide you are right for the school.

And it can show when you are lacking in knowledge. Be honest and open. Not afraid to

speak your mind. Let your thoughts connect the dots between diverse areas of life to create

impact and presence. Left to your own devices, you’ll be brilliant!!! Ask thoughtful questions.

Good Luck!!!

Note: these comments are my own thoughts. I speak only for myself not for any school policy.
