^ O_o I'm not familiar with not so much...as could you give me an example?

These are combinations that work, correct?

i think it works like this:
he is not so much blue as green.
means something like he is green rather than blue.
if u need an example, open may 08 qas, #11 on the 35 prob writing section.

It just so happens that I have the May 08 QAS right next to me lol. Here's the example:

The director valued the actor not so much for his broad commercial appeal but because he approached every role with passion and intelligence.

(A) as shown above
(B) but because of his approaching every role with passion and intelligence
(C) but for being passionate and intelligent in approaching every role
(D) as for him approaching every role passionately and intelligently
(E) as for his passionate and intelligent approach to every role

Prefer...to...

Not only... but also

Preoccupied/preoccupation .. with

Vary...with

Either...or / neither...nor

Prohibit... from

Between... and

Just as...so (too)

(not) so much...as

ability...to

capable...of

regarded as ..

think of ..

(C) but for being passionate and intelligent in approaching every role
(D) as for him approaching every role passionately and intelligently
(E) as for his passionate and intelligent approach to every role

The answer is (E). (A), (B), and (C) don't use the idiom correctly, and (D) lacks parallelism.

Yup the answer is E.

The only one that I have ever missed is:

Inconsistent ... with.

It was the last or second-last question on a QAS. :(
