The only good schools in those states are the private schools in Lexington and Nashville. Vanderbilt of course, then Centre, Transylvania, et all… UK is decent, UT-Knoxville is known for its ugly campus. Nice setting though on the Cumberland River.

I was reading a lot of posts calling UCSC a stoner/party/joke school, and although its true that pot smoking is really prevalent and its not as competitive as some of the other UCs, its still a really good school, and certainly isn’t a joke school. A lot of its science programs are some of the best in the country, and you really can’t go wrong with any of the UCs.

I felt like I had to brag a little bit because I’m going to be a freshman there in the fall.

UCSC is a stoner school but the rest of the UC’s aren’t? The entire UC system is where stoners and hippies go to get stuff DONE. lol

Nothing wrong with smart stoners, its the dumb ones you have to stay away from!

I’m not sure if anyone has done New Jersey yet. But anyone that knows anything about Jersey is that most people want to get the FREAK out of here.

Rutgers- I don’t know the out-of-state reputation, but it seems more positive than in-state. From all my Jersey friends (which is most of them, obviously), Rutgers has a very negative reputation. It’s a shame to go to Rutgers, because it means you were either not smart enough or didn’t have enough money to go OOS. There are way too many asians and indians, and it’s in a crappy part of Jersey. It’s so large and the perception is that you won’t get anything from Rutgers. Their sports suck, the name sucks, and just everything sucks about it. It’s the flagship, but it’s far from something to be proud of. There is absolutely no comparison with New Jersey-Rutgers and California-Berkeley/LA.

TCNJ- Another lame school in this butthole of America. We mock teachers who have gotten a degree from TCNJ and there’s a consensus that they don’t deserve to lecture us. Haha, it’s extreme but that’s how people feel. Plus it’s in a poop town (Ewing), which is the butt of all jokes in the Mercer County athletic conference. What’s TCNJ known for anyways? It used to be called Trenton State (and we all know what Trenton is…), so I guess it got a little better in terms of name. But that’s it.

Princeton- 'Nuff said.

Rowan- Uhm…I don’t know much about this. I know a fair amount of people go to this school (along with Rutgers, TCNJ, and the community college), so it can’t be that good. It’s not even in Fiske’s College Guide; there must be a reason. From rankings alone, we can discern that Rowan is even worse than Rutgers/TCNJ.

Kean- Another place where in-state kids go if they aren’t worthy enough to get outta town, at least.

New Jersey Institute of Technology- Nothing compared to the top-tier tech institutes around the country.

Montclair State- Where is this place again?

Rider- Nothing special about this place. Some kid died from alcohol poisoning related to a hazing thing a few months back. If you can’t get into Rutgers/TCNJ, this is where you go too. Gah.

William Paterson-Uhm…I have never heard of this place until my guidance counselor suggested it to me. She failed to realize that it’s a craphole, I’m overqualified (by light-years), and that it’s in New Jersey. That’s all there is to it.

Seton Hall- Don’t know much about this place…apparently South Orange isn’t that friendly with the students (typical Jersey personality) but they have a prep school too. Meh.

Moral? Don’t go to school in New Jersey. Except Princeton, but OOS only.

Any school you go to is going to have pot smoking, but the UC system isn’t really a mecca for hippies and stoners unless you’re going to Santa Cruz or Berkeley. UCSD has a reputation for being socially dead (which I’m sure isn’t entirely true)

MASSACHUSETTS.no other comments required

Seton Hall does have a good reputation. Good law school.

UCSD is socially dead in the way that UCSB is a huge party school, both are mostly true but there are plenty of students who defy those stereotypes.

Isn’t Stevens in New Jersey?

And being from Massachusetts, I know there are bad schools. The UMass system is nothing to be proud of, for one (Altho Amherst is getting better I guess…). Neither is the state college system, the whole public scene is subpar.

^yeah the UMass system sorta sucks, but you can’t deny that we’ve got some stellar schools here as well

I am sick of everyone bashing UN Reno before they come to even know about it. It still is the University of Nevada, established way before UNLV. Many awards given to the journalism school. Not as great as some UC schools, but not a gigantic party school as one “smart&blonde<3” would say. I am definitely not planning on attending this college, but that is just because it does not hold my major. Beautiful campus, I have a friend who turned down a full ride to Notre Dame to go to UNR.

UNLV is different, primarily a party/commuter school, dominated by Las Vegas students, but not too bad of a school.

I don’t have time to skim all the pages, but I’ll post on some Ontario schools, I know you guys aren’t as naive as some other people I’ve met in the US, and know Ontario is a province in Canada :). Just in case anyone was interested. Here are the “top” schools in Ontario:

U of Toronto: Definitely the best international reputation of all the Ontario schools. It has a great engineering program that is very selective (entering average for engineering science program was ~94%). Lots of things to do, its Toronto after all. Diverse…well there’s about every kind of Asian possible lol (I’m south asian so no racism here). However, some campuses are more commuter and competition is tough. PREMEDS try to avoid Toronto if they want to stay in Canada for medicine as the grades are hard to come by. For those who want to go to med school in the US, UofToronto and McGill and UBC are great choices because of their international reputation. Sciences, Maths, and Engineering are the forte.

U of Western Ontario: Stupid name, great school. Arguably the best looking campus in Canada. The party school. Work very hard and the 4.0s will pour in no problem. Respected university with great campus life. Great sports teams and is located in London, Ontario (2 hours south of Toronto). Strong in the sciences. Not too much to do in London.

McMaster University: Have perhaps the most selective program in Canada, the Bachelor of Health Sciences…you need a 90% average to even apply (some say you need at least 94% to even have a chance) then you need to hand in a supplementary form answering 3 short answer q’s. Then, people grade them. Very arbitrary process, and is most sought after program for PREMEDS. Solid for academics. Good sports teams. Located in Hamilton, Ontario. Not much to do in Hamilton though.

York University: Gets a bad rep. Almost like a second tier university, but its actually really good. Always under the shadow of nearby UofToronto. Supposedly weak in sciences. Don’t know too much more.

Wilfred Laurier University: Strong in business, great school spirit. Located near Waterloo I believe. Can’t tell you much more, but it has a solid reputation.

Uof Waterloo: The engineering/computer school. This is where you wanna go if your an engineer or doing something with computer science. Great reputation. RIM has one of their main locations there, great to get work there to pad your resume. Solid rep. for mathematics too.

Queen’s University: Really dumb name. Forget the queen already Canada. But anyways, great school. One of the best reputations. They just won the YATES CUP, which is our version of the BCS bowl lol. One of the most respected universities and a tougher one to get into.

U of Windsor: Don’t go there. I live in Windsor, it sucks. And you can’t understand the profs English I heard, yes they are foreign.

There are more, but I don’t know a lot about them, but we’re getting into the Tier 2 universities after the ones mentioned above.

Georgia:

Emory: simply amazing… top 2 or 3 best schools in the South and the best in Georgia.

Georgia Tech: good school, especially for engineering!

UGA: good school… many instate kids want to go here. kind of a party school.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas - Stereotyped as a party school because of it’s location but not entirely true. Greek life is nothing popular–infact, UNLV greek life is just another cliche social clique. A big commuter school (reason why the PARKING IS HORRIBLE) since most of the in-state students have a state millennium scholarship that pays for most of the tuition. Ranked 2 and highly respected in the nation for their Hospitality/Hotel program, and it’s no wonder because it’s LAS VEGAS and it’s basically every Hotel/Business/Events Major’s playground with all the networking, internships, and jobs available. Cornell University is just ranked 1 because it’s an ivy. A large population of international students that are mostly from Asia (Korea, Japan, China). Uhhhhhhh…people who transfer/go here from other states are generally butthurt to find out they can’t party because they’re under 21. School spirit? Eh. Football team is an embarrassment and not worth mentioning (but I just did). Overall, not too bad of a school.

University of Nevada, Reno - Where most of Las Vegas kids go to…just because they want to get out of the city. Doesn’t like being called “UNR” (they prefer “Nevada” because they feel that they’re so special)… Most of the students are brainwashed to hate UNLV so they make shirts that expresses their hate towards the more recognized institution in Nevada.

Nevada State College - Located in the middle of the desert. Atmosphere is laid back and feels like high school. Where most of the community college students go to for a 4 year degree because they can’t afford UNLV’s rising tuition fees. The school of UNLV & UNR’s Nursing rejects.

College of Southern Nevada - The community college everyone goes to when they can’t get into UNLV. Also, because it’s way cheaper than the University.

And thats why I’m trying to go to a school out of the state of New Jersey…

Tennessee

University of Tennessee,Knoxville- Loved by half and hated by half in Memphis, probably liked more across the state. Party and football school, but b the best public school in the state in terms of academics. Awesome city. About a third of my high school’s graduating class goes here.

UT-Chatt- A lot smaller than UTK and not as good academically, but it’s still a decent school and cheap. Also in a great city.

UT-Martin- School that’s literally out in the middle of nowhere, but has a good academic reputation. Pretty small (Around 6,000 undergrads).

Memphis- aka Tiger High- Memphis’ commuter school. Academics are pretty terrible, and the campus is in a pretty bad part of town. Really cheap though, especially if you can commute. About a third of my graduating class went here.

MTSU- Nashville’s commuter school.

Curious to see what Duke, Vandy, Emory, UNC and UVa folks think of this.

Salisbury University in MD - secondary choice for people in maryland, good reputation for education, and business major, but people prefer deferent schools

UMich - great school. most people i know that go there are smart but not special and probably couldn’t go to a top 25 school if they werent instate. great sports, ann arbor is a cool town, the only thing i dislike is the size.

MSU-safety school for people applying to UMich. popular among farmers and rednecks. its alright, kinda a party school but it s a good school.

Directional Schools- mostly decent for teaching, party schools
Eastern- to be honest kinda ghetto. not the safest college. someone i knew, who was there for sports and transferred to Hillsdale College eventually because of the academics, said the academics were a joke and she barely studied

Western-popular with the farmer/country crowd, party school, it’s nickname is wastern.

Central-party a lot, more diverse crowd

Northern- academically better than the rest, i think i a lot of people from the UP go there and people who like the UP

Grand Valley-its alright, party a decent amount, best sports program in DII

Michigan Tech-engineering school, in the UP, typical tech school (a lot more guys than girls), cold with tons of snow

Wayne State-easy to get into, lots of pre-meds, one of the better state schools probably

Hillsdale-very good in the humanities, very conservative so at least 40% of the students are also very religious

Hope-similar to hillsdale, maybe not quite as good academically

Kalamazoo-underrated and often forgotten about, great school though, wish i applied.

Spring Arbor-very christian school in south central michigan. most of the students are from the area
