Post your own state's college reputations'

Just for some background. I’m from NY, and go to University at Buffalo. These mostly represent my personal opinions.

Columbia: Top academics across many fields.

Cornell: Great for engineering and research. Great for some other random stuff like agri and hotel management, and then very good for most everything else. Cold and steep hills, but crazy parties.

NYU: NYC, hipsters, expensive.

RPI: One of the best engineering schools in NY, still significantly behind Cornell though.

RIT: If you want a job after college, its good. Not known for research or social life.

U of Rochester: Has great academics overall. I don’t hear much about it on a day to day basis though. One of my top choices for schools, but it didn’t have quite the engineering I thought I would want.

Syracuse: More expensive than I consider it really worth, but not a bad school.

SUNY Binghamton: Everyone on here seems to love Binghamton, but I just don’t understand why?

SUNY Stony Brook: Good school if you’re interested in science. Engineering seems fair there too, but Buffalo is probably better.

SUNY Geneseo: It’s the bee’s knees where I come from. A lot of the HS teachers talk it up. I’m not impressed.

SUNY Albany: Known as a party school. They’ve got some good sciences too, I think.

SUNY Buffalo: Best public for engineering grad-prep due to the massive research. Otherwise, its got fair academics and lots of parties, but everything else about it sucks.

Maryland!

Public:
University of Maryland, College Park - Where everyone wants to go, it’s just far enough away but not too far (I live just outside of DC). Amazing community and athletics, the academics are really good too maybe a little overrated. Filled with laxers and people from the DC area. It’s also high school version 2.0, a good half the class comes here. The very good to better than average students come here (basically everyone with a 3.4 and above). The really good students come here because they offer so much money. Anyone who doesn’t get in comes on Freshman Connections where they’re not really a student until second semester. Also, located in the ghetto of PG county, ew.

UMBC - The school for math and science people. Also the school for people who can’t get into College Park. They don’t have big sports, which is what really matters anyways, right? Baltimore County, not Baltimore City, so it’s in a nice area at least.

UMD, Eastern Shore - Black people who want to be near the beach. I know that it exists, that’s about it. Like three people from my school have gone here ever. It’s historically black, and really easy to get into. If you want to be near the beach, you’re better off at Salisbury. I’m pretty sure the shore is the same no matter where you are, anyways.

Salisbury - White people who want to be near the beach. Way below College Park, about tied with Towson for third best (after St. Mary’s of MD). Really popular, close to the shore, not hard to get into and not hard academics. You also get the hicks from the shore. Filled with beautiful white people playing lacrosse, aka MD in miniature. We love our lax!

Towson - About on the same level as Salisbury. Mostly people who can’t get into Maryland. Huge party school. Lots of laxers since it’s near Baltimore, but not in as nice of a part of Baltimore area as UMBC. Partying and more partying is what Towson does.

St. Mary’s of Maryland - Smarter white people laxing it up on the beach. The honors college, it’s a good, underrated school. They love their lacrosse there, or so I hear (who doesn’t???). It’s in southern MD on the shore, so you get the hicks.

Frostburg - The reject school. You go here if your only other option is community college, but you would be better off there. It’s in western Maryland, where nobody lives, so the only people who go there are the local hicks and dumb people from DC suburbs and Baltimore suburbs. Seriously, tell someone you’re going to Frostburg State and they’ll probably start laughing.

Morgan State - Historically black, some people go there, I’m not really sure where it even it. I don’t think its very good, though.

Bowie State - Is this actually located in Bowie, MD? Because I live near there, and I know absolutely nothing about Bowie State.

Private
Johns Hopkins - Really smart kids who want to be doctors and don’t like to have fun. Located in Baltimore, a lot of out-of-staters.

Loyola Maryland - Biggest laxer school ever. Rich suburban white kids who love lacrosse.

Navy (not private but not a MD public either so I didn’t really know where to put it) - Hardcore but awesome. Annapolis is really nice.

^Let me get this straight. Johns Hopkins has 44 national lacrosse championships (including 9 Div. I NCAA championships) and Loyola has 0. Yet you describe Loyola as the biggest Lax school ever? Get real!!! And do you know any current Hopkins students? Most are not becoming doctors and most have a good deal of fun in addition to working hard.

Hopkins has more championships but Loyola has more of a lax culture as far as I’ve seen… You can act like a laxer without actually being good, trust me.

Sonoma State University
If you go here, you were unable to escape the North Bay. Sucks to be you trying to go to school while living in one of the most expensive places in the country.

UCD
Middle of the road college experience. Most people go here for ag or vet. If you are there and doing something else it was a fall back.

Cal
“I got a 2401 on the SAT while baked out of my mind.” 'nuff said.

UCSF
Only a medical field graduate school. Helped me through cancer so I’ll give a thumbs up =).

Chico State
Decent school, awesome party. People aim blind folded and land here. Also thought of as a school for Nor*Cal students with seperation or homesick issues.

Sac State
Set in our state’s wonderful capitol, Crackramento. Commuter school for people stuck in Sac.

SF State
“What? Sac didn’t take you?” Bay Area’s version of Sac State.

Santa Clara
Daddy is a .com-er and you dont have the grades for Stanford.

USF
Daddy is a .com-er and you don’t have the grades for Santa Clara.

Stanford
This is where you go when the prestige of Cal was just not enough, you needed a large price tag to go with it.

Pepperdine
God came to your parents in a dream and he told them about the heathen at UCSB. Most beautiful campus in the whole state because it is ‘Heaven.’

Santa Cruz
“Wait… what? Santa Cruz? I thought this was Humboldt… dude… I am so baked.”

Humboldt
“Wait… what? Humboldt? I thought this was Santa Cruz… dude… I am so baked.”

Cal Tech
You don’t apply to Cal Tech. You are predisposed to going there before birth when your parents signed up for that super secret fertility treatment program hosted by the DOD, Raytheon and Boeing. This is why all students of Cal Tech have IQs that resemble the Super Lotto Plus jackpot and have upgraded their Playstations to ‘weapons grade.’ They don’t do homework. Their robot does their homework.

USC
University of Spoiled Children
University of Sports Champions
SoCal’s Stanford without the grades and more sports.

UCLA
Where all the smart kids go to flee Nor*Cal.

UCSD
University of California and Science Degrees.

UCSB
I believe SB stands for SurfBoards or maybe Sex and Booze.

Loyola Marymount
Film students.

Cal Poly SLO
You go here if you were able to complete the LEGO Millenium Falcon in an hour… when you were 6.

All the other schools seem to be for out of state students. I don’t know why.

i live in virginia soo
VCU - eveybody in richmond praises the school but really its just a great medical school and art school other then that its your regular B average type of state school

ODU - average school like vcu but lower on standards not much to say, its a toss up between odu and vcu with who gets the most thugs

Radford - party school in the same league as radford, degree not valuable

VA Tech - great eingeering school and football, very competitive

CNU - hard school to get in but for what reason? nobody knows where this school is located and the degree isnt valuable but majority of people will say this is a good school

JMU - party school where majority Caucasians attend and get drunk and act wild but its a average school

GMU -commute school pretty average but its up there

UofR - good school but nobody goes there or even talks about it, its not on anybodys radar instate its mostly a school for out of staters, i’ve never heard anything about uofr before anyways.

W&M - probably one of the best schools in the state

Liberty - trash school nobody knows about it, degree name isnt valuable

Black colleges - hampton, St paul, vsu, nsu, vuu etc, - basically you should know the rep of these there all in the same category except hampton is probably the best hbcu in the state the rest of the black colleges just serve for blacks can have a degree easily

ferrum - unvaluable degree nobody heard of it, not worth time just a joke

Thanks, appreciate your input, babydoll20

Georgia:

Public:

UGA - #56 on USNews, SEC school, state flagship, big party and sports school, great academics as well, everyone in georgia is a fan, good for business, law, education, just expanded their engineering offerings to compete with Ga Tech

Ga Tech - #35 on USNews, ACC school, top Engineering in the country, great business program (top 30), very intense and sort of nerdy, good but not crazy about sports like UGA

Ga State - Up and coming (commuter) school, very urban, good law and business, doesn’t really have a secluded campus, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, great back up for those who couldn’t get into UGA or Ga Tech

Ga Southern - Don’t know much about academics, but I heard it’s a big party school
Kennesaw State - Good for nursing

Private:

Emory - #20 on USNews, elite school in GA, often compared to Vanderbilt, great for premed and business, no one really talks about it outside of Atlanta, probably more known outside of GA, lots of JAPs

Mercer - In Macon, don’t know much about it, heard it’s good for pharmacy, maybe good for engineering too

Spelman - HBCU (#1 USNews), all female

Morehouse - HBCU (#3 USNews), all male

Clark Atlanta - HBCU (#22 USNews) don’t know much about it, heard they were having some problems with money

There are tons of other schools but I am not very familiar with them. (Berry, Agnes Scott, etc…)

UF - Good/OK
UM - OK
UCF - Blegh
New College - Good
FSU - Blegh
Everything else sucks.

^^
I went to FSU undergrad, it’s an awesome school!!

^For many it may be but when compared as a top florida school to other top state schools it’s ‘Blegh’. One needs only look at it’s acceptance requirements to see so. That and I also know many people who go/went their and they said the classes were large and taught by TAs or professors who could barely speak english. That’s pretty ‘Blegh’ to me.

Minnesota:

UMN - Twin Cities - Every one wants to go here and most do. Great Honors program and awesome social scene if you like urban environments. It seems to be attracting a lot of Asian students lately.
UMN - Duluth - Only known for College of Pharmacy, otherwise it only has the town going for it.
St. Cloud State - Decent business reputation but it is going down fast. They have no standards and are notorious for drinking.
Mankato - Another “party” school like St.Cloud but with higher admission standards.
Winona - Pretty good school, great value. Love it or Hate it.

Carleton - Known as the elitist school with plenty of WASPs Not very popular around Minnesota but academically it’s an awesome place.
Macalester - Not well known by high school students, but has an awesome reputation globally. Close battle for #1 school in MN with Carleton.
St. Thomas - Great school for business majors as their graduates are well known in the state.
CSB/SJU - Decent academics and surprisingly fun social scene due to lenient policies.
Gustavus - Often times, you smoke or your parents are alumni. Considered a safety school for many hoping to get into Carleton/Macalester college.
St. Olaf - Great mathematics/sciences/music and recently have seen an increase in their reputation.

Colorado

School of Mines - While a great engineering school, nobody really wants to live in Golden and with people being accepted with 3.3s its questioned if it is slipping in admission requirments

University of Colorado - Boulder - Lots of stereotypes about hippies and drug use, but after people visit it for the first time they relize it isn’t true

Colorado College - Argueably the best school in Colorado, but its unique schedual makes a lot of people uninterested

Colorado State University - Ft. Collins - Most popular next to Boulder, considered by a lot academicaly the same as Boulder, despite the difference in USNW rankings

Regis - never talked about

Coloradeo State University - Pueblo - nobody wants to live in Pueblo, nobody really considers it

University of Colorado Colorado Springs - Backup for many people applying to CU and CSU, but living near there it has a lot of parties and drug use that few people know about. Lots plan to transfer from there to CU and CSU but rarely do

Colorado Christian University - if you are looking for a Christian School

Adam State/Mesa State - for if you have below a 3.0

Fort Lewis - Good School, usualy underestimated

very funny, APG707…and pretty close to the mark.

Louisiana.

Tulane - definitely the closest thing Louisiana has to Ivy League. great school.
Loyola - Tulane’s next door neighbor. Basically a music school.
UNO - pretty good for a state school. They’ve been having some serious problems with budget cuts lately, but they’ll get you on your feet.
LSU - football. football. football. partying. Geaux Tigers.

That’s really all of the state schools I know about. haha.

LOL at this thread…I love reading all these.

NJ…goodness…

Rutgers-state flagship. Everyone’s safety. Pretty good school academically, but does have a reputation for having its own STD. Where the average to above average kids will end up. The school that some really smart kids end up at and everybody says, “How did THEY end up at Rutgers?” Probably 85% of the Asians from my school go here. Football team has become pretty good though. Yay.

Princeton-AMAZING school, but no one from NJ actually applies. Or gets in. Known to be super snobby.

NJIT-All the math-y kids apply here as a safety. No one really knows what they DO there, its just there.

TCNJ: Not many people go, but is looked upon pretty well. I think sosme people go for the dentistry school with UMDNJ, which is supposed to be great.

Ramapo-“Hey, its gotten a lot harder to get into.” For some reason, thats what everyone says about it, even though its really not great academically. I think all they do is party. but at least the campus is nice.

Seton Hall-Good law school…does anyone go there for undergrad? Who knows?

Monmouth-At least its by the shore.

Rowan-A lot of the football team is going to end up here. Count on that.

William Paterson-“My dad went there.”

Washington

U-Dub - Best school in WA. Really good medical programs, overall good school. All the Asians want to go here so bad.

Western Washington University - Good Tier 2 School for teaching. Lots of U-Dub rejects go here, though, but it’s a decent school if price is a concern. Lots of potheads here lol.

Washington State University - Decent school with good vet/agriculture/comm programs, but the party scene and LOW expectations of the school totally kills its reputation.

Seattle University - Private school, don’t know much about this place but it’s a decent school in the heart of Seattle.

Gonzaga University - Private catholic school, no one really cares about this school lol.

Eastern Washington University and Central Washington University are just ignored pretty much.

Whitman College - all on its own, but rep is pretty decent.

Some overlooked WA colleges:

Pacific Lutheran University
Seattle Pacific University
The Evergreen State College (very well regarded public liberal arts college)
University of Washington –Tacoma
University of Washington –Bothell
University of Puget Sound (well regarded private university)
Walla Walla College
WSU @ Tri-Cities
WSU @ Vancouver
Whitworth College (nice LAC)

Virginia (reputations of students) -

William & Mary - smart, nice, value tradition, kinda nerdy
UVA - kind of elitist
V Tech - kind of elitist
James Madison U - people who are likely to party and sleep around whilst getting a good education
U of Richmond - Humble, outdoorsy people who want a nice, “normal” college experience
V Commonwealth U - Beardy vegan stoners and their body-mod hipster friends.
George Mason U - decent school but nobody’s ever there
Old Dominion U - Virginians who listen to rap music
Longwood and Ferrum - Virginians who don’t mind being in the middle of freaking nowhere for 4 years

The Top 3 (No particular order)
UVA-well rounded school, respected in business. A #1 choice for in-staters. Known to be very preppy, but very respected
W&M-a lac type of school; respected in liberal arts majors (political science); for people who want to seem sophisticated; a bit more competitive than uva due to its small numbers
VTECH-school that many virginians want to attend. may not be stronger than uva in most areas, but no one can disagree with the fact that vtech is much better for technology, engineering, and architecture; seems like the real college experience in many people’s opinions; sucks that a few people believe that only rednecks attend this school, despite the fact that rednecks can’t maintain over a 4 like most people who attend vtech
The Average
GMU-Many people go here to save money; okay in everything
JMU- Party school, more competitive than GMU in a way
VCU-everyone that at least got a B is guaranteed in this school; campus is very scary
The Worst
ODU-black school
Radford-hillbilly school where those white popular girls from high school go and realize that theyre not popular anymore and those who they bullied in high school who went to the top 3 colleges will be their bosses
It seems that Virginia resembles Massachusetts in a way. UVA-Harvard (well rounded); W&M-Williams (LAC); VTECH- MIT (engineering and technology)
