//// how is photography not fine art? ////

Wonderful question. I offer the noted work of Lucas Samaras as an example:
Dana Pastusec's Blog: Image;

And I challenge anyone to convince me this is fine art:

Great thread! I’m a newbie to the forum so I thought I’d chime in to say hello. D2 is applying to the illustration and/or painting programs at SAIC, RISD, MICA and MassArts. I’ve found this discussion really useful, not just to me as a mom, but because I’m a photographer (I like pretty things but can’t draw them, haha).

There is a staggering amount of talent and inspiration here! Best of luck to all as you finish up your applications!

I posted my portfolio quite a while ago, but it was pretty incomplete. Since then I have been accepted to Ringling, Moore, and SAIC. I plan to study graphic design at either Moore or Chicago. Here is a more complete portfolio:

Raining:

Dare I present you with the slew of drawings, paintings, and prints that are quite similar if not identical to the form and content of your first example. That really proves…what’s the word…nothing

As for the second, are you asking if the Mona Lisa is fine art, or is that a picture taken of the Mona Lisa?

/// Dare I present you with the slew of drawings, paintings, and prints that are quite similar if not identical to the form and content of your first example. That really proves…what’s the word…nothing ///

I believe you missed my point - or I did not communicate it well. My point was that the photo work of Lucas Samaras IS fine art. I thought it was so self-evident that no further explanation was needed. ;-)

//// As for the second, are you asking if the Mona Lisa is fine art, or is that a picture taken of the Mona Lisa? ////

Actually it is a mosaic of pixels. ;-)

I was challenging the opinion that this painting was fine art. My position is that if it is, then so is this photograph (below) by Arnold Newman. Again, I offer this to make the point, photography is as much a fine art as is painting, drawing, etc.

Mollie14 - Congratulations on your acceptances! How long before you heard back from your schools?

It’s a mixed bag, but that is to be expected. Overall you are at a good starting point. “INK” is beautiful. If you can learn to capture and transpose its qualities digitally, your design work will improve considerably. It’s a common problem for many students, so don’t be discouraged. The “Print” magazine series is your best work. Print has an annual cover design contest for students. Yours would be competitive. You might look into submitting it.

Best of luck to you!

Mirallwood: Thanks! I received my acceptances from Ringling and Moore about a month after applying and a little over a month from SAIC.

RainingAgain: Not to ignore anything you just said, but I’d like to agree to disagree. Although I am considerably biased because this is MY work, I know that this being a high school senior’s design (primarily all design work) portfolio, it is beyond what colleges expect to see. I know that my drawings are definitely the low point of my portfolio, but besides that I am at a very good point, going into graphic design in college. Thanks for your opinion though. In terms of my Print Cover, I did it sophomore year so I’m glad that even at that point (two years ago) I was producing good work.

Having reviewed a couple of thousand incoming portfolios during my tenure at a major art college – as well as taught hundreds of Intro to G.D. students – as I said, you are at a good starting point.

A point I wish to emphasize is that what you do off the computer is as important as what you do on a computer. Don’t stop sketching and drawing even if you plan to major in graphic design. The reason being that all work begins to look like the limitations imposed upon it by the software, whereas hand-rendered work has an energy and vitality that is difficult to create digitally.

Consider the wonderful and highly acclaimed work of James Victore…

thanks for the wonderful feedback … any more takers?

There is no visual correlation between type and image. The text appears “placed” upon the canvas rather than integrated into the painting.

geez NapoleonInRags, you need to calm down. i did not mean to offend anyone. i meant ‘fine art’ in the traditional sense of the word, like paintings & drawings. i guess i wasn’t really thinking, but no need to get all riled up…

and for the record, I am NOT eurocentric at all…don’t judge ppl.

@ amigirl

i personally spoke with the one of the people in charge of admissions at parsons
( i know you’re applying to tisch but she was critiquing on photo)
anways she said that they get really tired of seeing pictures of children, flowers, pets, train tracks, and abandoned houses

pictures of flowers and children tend to be overdone and cliche
i’m not saying that you didn’t have great pictures of them on flickr
but i would try to limit the number that you submit to tisch

also the people at tisch are looking for a portfolio that has a unique style and isn’t all over the place
if the portfolio looks like it was taken by a bunch of differnt people then it never works out

as for my favorites
i loved the first one, circus, fun ride, jewels, ready to go, and newlyweds

as for the whole newlyweds series, i thought it was really beautifully done
but you might also want to limit the number of photos you choose from that series because they will want to see more variety from you

i also applied to tisch
ed though and was accepted
so good luck to you! hope you get in as well

i guess i get riled up because this way of thought has had negative effects on my art education. it’s a sore spot, and i think wrongly so.

you may not be eurocentric, but your opinion is.

when you say “traditional sense of the word,” you are proving my point. What is traditional fine art and who gets to define it?

I posted mine a few months ago, just thought I’d let you guys know that I got into SVA.

hello, I am currently a sophmore in highschool, and this is in no way my final portfolio, but I am applying to a few precollege programs this summer. I know I am lacking life drawings, substantial paintings, and that most of mine are portraits, but that’s why I want to do a precollege. Critique it, please

New updates to be added soon, but here’s some of my portfolio work as it is right now: [Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket](http://s1012.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/home/christinecha/allalbums)

places i’m interested in: cooper (first choice, but a stretch, i know), parsons, fit, pratt…

feedback would be greatly appreciated!

also – i hate how photobucket is formatted… any suggestions?

Hello~ I think I posted my portfolio on an entirely different thread but anyways. It’s been a while, and I would like some input before I submit it.

I’m interested in FIT, Parsons, and SCAD. I’ve been accepted into scad, but I still have to submit my portfolio and such. I’ve already finished FIT’s test, so now I’m just waiting on being accepted(hopefully).

Um… so here’s the portfolio haha.

My Parsons Challenge pics are outside of the portfolio. They still have no writing to them, because I have no idea what I should be writing.

I just want to know what I should have more of, or less of. I’m not much of a sketcher anymore, I just like doing things and finishing them perfectly in my mind. But if I need more then I’ll be happy to put them.
