posted my stuff a while ago, but i think the link went bad. just wanted to post an update that I was accepted to saic with a presidential $88,000 scholarship. i’m waiting to hear back form cooper early decision before i send in any other apps, which will be to KCAI and MICA, possibly SMFA.

and to offer my two cents on the photo/fine art/whatever discussion: art schools don’t like to see an entirely photo portfolio unless the photos really say something unique, which in most cases it does not. at the same time art schools for the most part don’t like portfolios that are entirely self portraits and still-lives (unless it is a very traditional school like PAFA). my point is that art schools dont care what media your portfolio is as long as you’re saying something new.

Hey!
I thought you are fed up already and goner.
Counting down isn’t it? Are you excited?
What do you think of this year’s livejournal ?
Who is the guy dissing everyone?
Well, what can I say, Good luck.
I donno if she did but Dreyfoos kid scholastic golding who missed Cooper ED by inch ( or so everyone thought) was heading KCAI and that was the first time I heard of the school.
I did visit, liked alot but it is, well, Kansas city.
Good thing is, you could live large there compare to SAIC $88.000/4
It doesn’t matter where you’d end up, goal is not where or what you go or do UG, yes?
Keep going young friend, may the force be with you.

I like the portraits, starting with Boris and the two or three after. You may want to work on developing a more cohesive portfolio. Maybe narrowing it down to two or three series and perhaps having a more balanced selection (the first set in the park feels too long). The chiaroscuro nude feels out of place. It would be better if you skimped on some of the photos from the first set and lost the photo collage altogether to put in two more of the nudes (the black guy and the white chick). The ceramics just scream “I work in different media, I swear! look at my pots!” But that’s just me.

Wrt to the glare u should try a polarising filter.

I’m applying to cooper too but I didn’t do as well on my hometest as i’d have liked.

kaelyn:
thanks for the advice; the photos are from 2 series(one of thompkin sq and one of brooklyn) + the one nude and collage. ive been looking at them so long i dont know what to think any more

your rhythmic forms and feral self portrait are mega nice too

in terms of your regular port, the first drawing doesnt quite sit well with me, i just think the line quality isnt as nice as anything else you have, but maybe you have your reasons? maybe not.
[copy on Flickr - Photo Sharing!](copy | stantontaylor | Flickr) this picture also kinda has a pretentious triangle triangle vibe to me too, maybe thats harsh, but its just not terribly interesting, its like a throwaway shot from a disposable camera youre just dying to process. the one before it is really nice though

i hope all your cooper dreams come true! im still waiting for my hometest to come in the mail

ps. i dont mean to dis triangle triangle too much either. a lot of stuff on there is nice, but some of it gets too atmospheric/stupid and lacks any substance. if youre into that, okay, but it has no voice. ex. [TRIANGLE TRIANGLE](<a href=“Triangle Triangle”>Triangle Triangle) the dog and woods and things.

switched some of my old work to carbonmade : C.
yay, so much more asthetically pleasing than photobucket.
comments would be great, newer stuff to come. maybe tomorrow.

Good feedback, it seems like everyone on the forum is so cautious about saying stuff about other people’s work. I think it’s unanimous. Both the cooper reps and the SAIC reps objected to me using that first drawing in my portfolio. I was hoping theyd sort of help demonstrate a progression from my earlier works to the stuff i do now but i should have used something else. My friends, on the other hand, felt like the photographs were nice as studies but weren’t really portfolio material. I was trying to show where the landscape drawings came from. They were a process of trying to reconstruct the visual density of photographs (forgive the art talk).

I love this triangle triangle blog! Though I’ve never been opposed to pretty atmospheric photography. I think there’s a huge tendency in contemporary art to over conceptualize things which can kill a lot of beautiful work. It’s not unhealthy in and of itself, but there are so many factors outside of the conceptual that influence how a viewer experiences a work that are often overlooked. but thats me

Do you want to do a fine art program or a photoraphy program? Not fine art as drawing and painting but you know what i mean

I think you have a bit of work ahead of you. You’ve a little ways to go technically and perhaps a longer way to go conceptually. It’s important that your portfolio indicate some kind of personal direction and conceptual/aesthetic interest of your own. So far the work you have online seems to be composed largely of classroom assignments which all of the major schools at NPD’s will tell you is a big no-no. It’s great to have evidence of a sound technical training (of which i myself am somewhat lacking) but it needs to be going somewhere. In, my experience the less selective schools at the NPD’s tend to sugar coat things a lot. If you want more honest criticism go to the more selective schools like RISD and Cooper Union. Because they’re less desperate for students they’ll give you a much clearer idea of what exactly they themselves and many art schools in general expect from/ look for in their applicants. Also cooper and risd represent two ends of the artschool spectrum, one is primarily interested in an applicants conceptual development, the other in technical facility. I think you should find someway to tie your interests in the human figure, apparel and graphic design together. Also, identify some artists/designers that you are personally interested in and study their work. If you havent already done one of those pre-college course things already, you probably should. It will give you a much clearer idea of your competition and the standards you’ll be expected meet than your local high school might be able to offer.

–it seems like everyone on the forum is so cautious about saying stuff about other people’s work.

kaelyn, because art is this super subjective thing, you never know what is “good”
Have you noticed the most braggy posters don’t post their (or their proud offspring’s) stuff here? (i.e. me)
They don’t need peer critiques that will not guarantee anything or possibly embarrassing to everyone involved.
Keep going, good luck on Cooper.

Hi!.. Im from Sri Lanka hoping to transfer from here. Im taking gen education subjects, hopefully waiting to get my credits transfered.
Im going to apply to SAIC, SMFA, Kendall college of art and design, Memphis College of Art and Slippery Rock U, FIT and Howard…
I didn’t send my portfolio yet. I haven’t taken any art classes so far in my life. More of a self taught one. here is my portfolio… i dunno whether these are OK to send? :S i got more paintings which I need to upload. I’m greatly expecting scholarships… is there any chance of me getting any? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated :)

IMO you have a decent portfolio but it isn’t on the stronger end of the spectrum. Good evidence of technical ability but very weak sense of personal direction and conceptual development. You should get in to most of the art schools on your list but don’t expect too much in the way of merit awards which are the only kind of aid American art schools give to internationals. General universities like Howard, however, will be primarily interested in the strength of you academic record and your extracurricular involvements with your portfolio sort of being the icing on the cake. If you have a good record then it might be better to apply to more universities and liberal arts colleges as they would be more likely to award you a sizable amount of aid.

Thank you for the response. I haven’t taken any formal training in art. i have a pretty ok academic record with 3.53 GPA. I didn’t get my SAT score yet. well i wont have enough time to paint for admission purpose. I think I have to go on with this for now.

I would suggest you check out Kenyon, Bard, Centre, Connecticut College, Skidmore, Occidental and Bennington. They all have reputedly good art departments and considerable quantities of aid for internationals.

valtergeorge - Congratulations on your acceptance and award at SAIC!

I wish I were posting some real news, instead I’m just doing this to keep from biting my fingernails. D2 has applied to SAIC, SCAD, and MICA. She’s pretty relaxed about it. I’m the one who can’t sleep.

What’s the average waiting time for notifications? Is it possibly longer for international students?

The daughter of a close friend applied from overseas. Friend has suggested we write the schools to ask if a decision is forthcoming. Her daughter did this and the admissions person “put her out of her misery” and told her that she’d been accepted. She’s a freshman at RISD.

D2 is headed to Italy this weekend for a week-long school trip. I’m hoping we hear back before she leaves.

In my experience Art schools don’t take as long as regular universities to process their applications. Give it a out 4 - 6 weeks. They don’t take longer to process admission results for international students but depending on the school they may take longer to process financial aid stuff etc.

i’ve been doing photography for less than a year and i don’t take photos often, but i submitted 9 photos as a supplement for my columbia application.

and i printed my photos on regular paper =/ the color didn’t turn out right when i tried printing them on photopaper…let me know what you guys think. some of these art portfolios are amazing!!!
