Post your portfolio!

I am kind of all over the place when it comes to mediums, but photography is what I dabble with the most I suppose.
I don’t have a professional portfolio, just my DA account.

I applied to the College of Visual Arts (1st choice) & The Art Institute (Minneapolis). Unfortunately due to financial problems, I had to go someplace cheaper, even with the big scholarship CVA gave me.

Nice Gallery OC. Are all of your portfolio pieces listed on DA?

If you don’t mind me asking, how much did CVA give you, and where did you end up deciding to go?

I think almost all of the ones I used are on there. I know I used my first deviation on there for my portfolio. A lot of the other ones I used are on the 4th page of the gallery. I applied for Fall 2009 so I feel like if I applied now, it would be better. Haha

CVA gave me 20,000 over the course of four years. Unfortunately I am the youngest of three kids, so I kind of got the scraps financially. XD
I am currently going to Bemidji State University & might switch after this year to the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

I suppose you wouldnt be surprised that I’ve never heard of Bemidji? Anyways, it looks like an awesome location in terms of natural beauty.

Haha, that doesn’t surprise me. It is pretty small.

parlsky, your portfolio is awesome!!

Really striking photos Valerie, wonderful job.

Thanks, I have yet to see what kind of responses I’ll get from schools though. I’ll be at my first portfolio day in 15 years in October… I’ll post feedback in the hopes that it’s useful to someone.

Your own portfolio is impressive too. Unfortunately I know little about photography and cant give any useful or educated comments. Are you enrolled currently or in act of applying etc?

I’m going to SAIC for photo and new media

parlsky: oh no, i just take photos for fun  i’m going to be a music major at oberlin conservatory.

Good for you, Oberlin’s a great school for music.

NC to OH, I’ve made that trip a bazillion times. Moved back and forth from Columbus to Charlotte for a number of years.

Cody- really nice portfolio. Do you work with film or digital?

im not applying to art schools but i may send in a portfolio as a supplement. would it look bad if i dont have much since i just took up art again?

Hi everyone, I’m currently a HS senior (class of 2011, woot!). I plan on majoring in visual comm/advertising/graphic design, depending on what school I go to. I haven’t applied anywhere yet, but I’m going to NPD this year. I’ll come back and post up my portfolio once I scan everything and put it online.

I REALLY wanna go to SAIC (or even UChicago if I can get in-- their student body seems delightfully quirky, and I’m nerdy enough to fit right in). I live in NC, and I’m dying to get out of the Bible Belt, no offense to anyone. Chicago seems like an awesome place to live. Thoughts from people with SAIC experience?

One concern: I’ve switched high schools three times (it wasn’t my fault or my choice), and I’m homeschooled right now. My art education, at this point, is all self-taught. And I’m afraid that I won’t have as good of a chance as getting accepted. Any thoughts/advice on this?

Sorry, that was definitely TL;DR. I’ll go back to lurking now. .___.

If you’re homeschooled now, can you find time to take an art class of some type at your local community college or anywhere else near home? You could develop a few more pieces for your portfolio.

I don’t know anything about SAIC but it’s a great idea to go somewhere different, that you are drawn to, for college. Good luck!

I doubt the homeschool aspect will hurt your acceptance chances, at least not with SAIC or many of the other private art schools. It might make it more difficult if the school you’re shooting for is really competitive or has a very low acceptance rate. Like greenwitch said, take some local art classes and get those representational pieces in there, if you dont have them already. You’ll probably be restricted to talent based scholarships, so you’ll want as strong a portfolio as possible.
