hey guys! i’m not applying as a visual art major, just looking for feedback for my portfolio (photography) - any comments? especially on arrangement / layout. also, which photo would you remove if you were me - my focus is on street/architectural photography, but does the nature photography a good addition? (and also 10 is the maximum i want to have)

I’m not a photography person… but here’s my thoughts on what you have :

I actually love your nature photography. It’s a nice addition to the portfolio. If I were you, I would remove one or two of the slides of the stadium seats/repeating seats. It’s just too much to have three images of roughly the same subject. … but that’s my thought.

I’m not really awake right now… so uh… if i think of more I’ll post it later

I’ve never really thought about art school before, but I’m tentatively considering RISD. Can I get some critiques on some pieces, and evaluation on whether or not I should even try?

as someone else has said on your profile, you definitely have lots of potential. I think schools would love to see more work like your “speed paint” and “ophelia” they demonstrate your technical skill the best.
Aaand, this will come across as a “do what I say and not what I do” sorta thing… if you’re applying to art schools do one or two purely observational realistic pieces. Your compositions and color choices are good and look quite elegant… but your pieces [especially poses and angles of the face] are very similar. Try more dynamic poses and daring compositions.

Also, when coloring, try to use more than one tone for the clothing or skin. Hold up your hand in front of your face. Notice there are yellowish tones, pinkish tones, even greenish and bluish tones [especially if you’re in an artificially lit space like me]
Your color combos are quite nice and eye-catching… so I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble incorporating more colors.

Careful with light sources on some of your pieces. The lights and shadows on “Ophelia” are throwing me off a bit.

So, in short. Yes, you should try RISD if you think you’d be happy there :] You definitely have the eye for color and composition. You just need to step out of your comfort zone and try really experimental pieces with different perspectives and the ilk.

As a person who moved from manga to realism, I have the same issue as you drawing faces… be careful and try not to cut off too much of people’s jawlines ^^" If that’s still a stylistic point for you and you realise you’re doing this… that’s good. [just make sure you can do a realistic portrait too o_o" ]

aaand … I love the texture you’re using. I generally derp out when I’m CGing and do mostly cell shading and nothing turns out pretty …

Was there something in particular you wanted a critique on? o_o

sorry… i have a tendency to do TL;DRs when I’m talking about drawing and art…

Im a high school senior applying to the film program at SUNY Purchase, i submitted these 6 pieces of media as well as a screen play (Which is the strongest part of the portfolio i think) What do you guys think?

@yvette Your portfolio is really something. Making the hand the first image, really grasped my eye, and I was really excited to see the rest. My second fav. Is off to work…it could have been given a more creative title…but it’s really good. And the Image that i thought does not belong: Soybeans…or A small space…doesnt really go with the theme, which I’ve assumed is idenity or self acceptance.

thank you very much for your response! c: I definitely am making that awkward transition between manga-y art and realism, so the critiques are very much appreciated. I’ll definitely try to improve between now and the deadline. Thanks again!

here is my photography porfolio!!! What do you think? Do you think I have a good chance of getting into NYU Tisch, RIT, School of Visual Arts, Carnegie Mellon, or St. Johns? (fine art departments’) ? - I have a 3.3- and I have over 12 extra curricular activities/accomplishments (most community service)

Hi all! Thought I would post my DA as well. I’m hoping to transfer this year into a strong Illustration program. Have a lot of stuff I haven’t photographed/scanned but they’ll be added progressively…mostly as soon as I find my camera. I’m applying to SAIC, Ringling, SMFA, Hartford Art School, VCU, UCF, CCAD, PNCA, and Winthrop University. Went to NPD and got good feedback from Ringling, PNCA, and SMFA. If you have any constructive criticism, please tell me as I have no idea what to put into my portfolio.

Where are you applying to?
-Some colleges have requirements like sketch journal, drawings (not from photo source) which it seems like all of it is from a photographic reference. Then again I didn’t take digital art. So it might be quite different.
Is there more to your portfolio?

I like it though. You have an understanding of shading, movement [Like the Dancer Piece]

I am applying to USC, UCLA, SAIC, MICA, Pratt and CalArts. I did use photographic reference (most of it, but not all). Although I didn’t see any requirements on the schools’ websites that said photographic reference is not allowed, I still begin to worry about this…Anyway, I’m glad you like it.

For CalArts, you’ll need much different stuff, but it also depends on what kind of art field you want to get into. Don’t necessarily make stuff to suit a particular school, but find a school that suits your goals and cater to what they want. I know they have other majors and everything, but it seems like many people apply for character animation there and have gestural stuff, cartoony characters with a lot of life, etc. But I don’t want to discourage you or make absolute statements just based on my observations that might not be true…

If anyone would like to see my portfolio that I’ve submitted to SAIC, SVA, RISD, and RIT, please pm me for a link to it cuz I feel uncomfortable posting it so publicly on this ^^;;

emifinan- I also had my portfolio approved by SAIC at a portfolio day, but I’m not really sure if this gives us an advantage? The vibe I got from the letters was “All you need to do now is apply and your in.” I don’t really know what to think of it?
