WOW!!! Thanks a lot for the great Feedback wasn’t not expecting that at all. If you need an in-depth review on your work let me know… I’ll be more than happy to! :smiley:

Observational

I have made one additional piece to add to that portfolio, it will be in my final portfolio that I submit to art colleges. I haven’t found what I like and drawing really yet, which why my drawings seem so experimental.
Mix Media

1# Fun Boy it is conceptual piece along with all the other mix media & digital work. Yes, there is a series lol :smiley: glad you notice that. It’s only contains 3 of the portraits. Images 1,9,10 are included in that series call the Expressive Boy self Portrait Series. The other portraits are drafts…

Majority of my work is are non filtered, if I do use filters… it’s in the beginning stages Majority of images are ‘inverted’ and or overlapping of the same images. I’ll send you the links to my other online actually college portfolio where it includes definitions and description of my some of the pieces. They might make more sense then.

Yes, I plan major is communication design.

Here is my unofficially Portfolio, I really want it to be competitive…so be honest lol! It includes standard college art portfolio of 20 pieces, I tried to include some descriptions of some of them.

In the future I’ll try to reflected the colors I use for my digital images and the express quality stroke that I used when I’m drawing.

Hey BigSenior,

You have much work to do, some of those schools you have listed are University schools, typically they don’t take portfolios, they accept student on grades and SAT, ACT scores. SVA is AICAD school, and if you’re applying for one of those art schools, you will for sure need a portfolio with drawings and such. Design pieces you have aren’t strong either. I advise that start at a community college for two year then transfer, then some AICAD school will take your “design” portfolio. I do recommend going to an AICAD school. Good luck!

@BigSenior I agree with @Wrencher. I wanted to see some hand drawn observational work and self portraits. I wanted to see some variety - sculpture, painting, animation, etc. variety is the spice of life and an excellent portfolio. You have talent, time to stretch it.

^And to add that as with all artist, you have to do you. You have to do what moves you.

Schools: CMU, UCLA, USC, WUSTL, some smaller state schools for communication design

I’m a bit worried because digital art tends to get a bad rap, but it’s the medium I’m most comfortable in and I don’t have too many observational works. Working off of photos isn’t look upon highly either, but I think I’ve added enough of my own interpretation that reference isn’t a huge deal but ack. Are the photos a bad idea? Also the oil and abstract screen print are weaker than the others, should I ditch them? Anyway, I’d really appreciate some feedback.

@Cervidae

I like it. You really need 2-3 solid works from observation. If you’re submitting 12-20 pieces which is the range for most portfolios, I don’t think a photo takes away from it at all. I like how your mind works. Each piece is different and unexpected.

@Cervidae

I love digital art! :D

Digital art is about what does work and what does not work. Sadly… I don’t see any images that you have that I went WOW or made me think. I would recommend you have more drawings from observation and other fine arts stuff. But your work has a design quality more than a digital art quality. Then again, I have more of a design and fine arts approach when it comes to digital art.

I don’t know if all of those University required portfolios. If they do then academics and test scores will be the major decider. Portfolios will help get your foot in the door. Your SATs, ACTs & GPA is how you will be accepted. I think your portfolio is okay for an art department school. For an traditional art school you will run into some major problems with your portfolio. :/

Just my two cent!

Good Luck

You should check this out…

@madaboutx thanks!
@wrencher94 all the institutions I’m applying to put heavy emphasis on the portfolio section; stats are what get my foot in the door but it’s the portfolio that is going to determine the final outcome. Could you be a little more specific as to where the issues are? Thanks for the link to the UCLA DMA post but it’s a tad out of date (a lot of the links to the portfolios are broken unfortunately :frowning: )

If you think your portfolio will get you in then…you should throw out that whole portfolio (not including the drawing and CD Cover) and start fresh! All the digital design work seem so flat and boring. The drawing you have is good skills in drawing. I’m sure they will want to see more of drawings from observation to see how far you can take it. Do some self portraits draw your mom, sister, dad.

I know people who got into or applied to UCLA and other art departments schools. They all told me that your portfolio what not as important as your academic stats.

Wrencher94, I don’t disagree. Many art departments do heavily consider academic prowess. Good academics is usually a good indicator that the student will be dedicated and put it the time and effort to improve their craft. All aspects of art whether its drawing, painting, a knack for design, color theory etc. can be refined in art school. Although, I know through personal experience that some friends of mine have got in with less than stellar academics but with awesome portfolios.

Cervidae, there’s nothing wrong with your interpretation of the photo reference (if we’re talking about your still life). The reason many art departments discourage photo referencing is because they get many submissions copied from photo that look dull and flat.

In terms of your portfolio, I love your Art Nouveau-Mucha influenced piece. What does the 9 indicate may I ask? I love your life drawing picture as well. The framing creates lines that help lead to the highlight of the shoulder.

My few gripes is the flier. The type hierarchy and overall design is ok. I’m not to keen on the longer portrait as well.

Overall, I see some really good stuff, hope to see more. Good Luck!

@pantherchamps
The works that used references were the non still lives (specifically the torero/matador and the tombstone)

The Mucha-esque piece was a playing card assignment. I find it interesting that you saw some Mucha in it. I really love his work but wasn’t really thinking about him when I was working on it.

Guys this is the link of my portfolio. I am a Mexican student wanting to transfer for sophomore year. I am applying to RISD, MICA, Calarts and SVA. Please let me know what you think since it is very hard for me as an international student to know what they are looking for. Specially since drawing in Mexico is only a tiny part of the curriculum and most first year classes are lectures on art and design theory.

Thank you!

Hey inigolv,

that link does not work…

Hey guys! Could I get some oppinions on my portfolio? I think I’d like to go for Fine arts to college, but I might or may not do animation? On the edge because I do need a career in art so. Idk, just some feedback would be great though!

[Shubhanks Art Website](http://shubhanksahay.wix.com/shueysart#!contact/c16fm)

@Shubhank:

Wow, your paintings are really good. I myself am going to college to major in studio art, but you are noticeably better than me. I think you definitely have the skill to go pro in fine art if you follow that path. The only problem is the art market isn’t getting any larger so, in this digital age, sometimes skill isn’t enough. You also need to make some connections and get a little lucky.

But I don’t see anything in your portfolio that indicates you couldn’t make it. I’d follow my dream if I were you. I’m also going after that dream, but after seeing your portfolio I realize that I have some catching up to do.

Moving to NY March of 2014, can anyone attending either school with a FD major share their pros & cons???

Oh lord, I have decided that I will for sure be trying to transferring to RISD, hopefully for their Spring 2014 semester term. I’m really nervous to see if I will be accepted, I herd that RISD rate acceptance rate drop 10%. I know you only will be accepted on the bases that you do not need the Summer Foundation Studies Program. Which typical offer to Fall accepted applicants.

My grade point average is pretty low, I got a 2.4 first semester ( I failed one class), and a 2.8 the second semester. I don’t know if my grades will make the cut for RISD, however I have been accepted to Memphis College of Art with 2.4 GPA, and they gave me 12K a year Faulty Scholarship.

When it come to my portfolio, I don’t know exactly where I stand. I thinks it pretty average. Here is the link to it: http://KevinArt.foliohd.com/view/MVF

Please note, that have I already completed foundation year at another AICAD art school and two of my foundation instructors have agreed to write a recommendation letter. (I’m also applying to Pratt & MECA)

So After reading and looking over my portfolio do you think I stand a chance of becoming a RISD Spring second semester sophomore? Be honest…

Ill definitely put all my stuff together for a portfolio.
