Postponed / Housing

Since the deadline for campus housing is Feb. 1, does that eliminate a kid on the postponed list from getting campus housing if they get accepted after Feb.1? Does anyone know how that works?

There will be enough housing left for most who want it. Usually mostly those who come in off the waitlist in summer are out of luck. Private dorms pick up that slack.

Thanks, Barrons. That helps to know. Hopefully, he’ll get off the list by March.

Just sign up with your deposit. You can back out of the contract, if deciding not to attending UW-Madison. Read the contract. That is what it says.

Yes, but if you do go to UW the contract is quite binding and not easy to get out of later. Assume you are either taking the dorm assigned or eating the coast of $5000 and up. They are very clear on that.

The housing deadline is NOT Feb 1. That was the deadline for one student who was accepted and given that as his personal deadline. The UW application deadline is Feb 1, still plenty of time to apply, then get a housing application deadline- usually about 2 weeks after your acceptance. Those students accepted after Res Halls (the public dorms for UW) is full will not get a housing contract. Those who miss their individual deadline will not get into Res Halls.

If you do not attend UW after signing a Res Halls contract you can get your deposit(s) back if you inform them in writing (separately from UW itself) by May 1st. If you do attend you are bound by the housing contract. Read the fine print for accurate info.

You have a window of opportunity to get into Res Halls once accepted to UW. Miss your deadline and you won’t get in. You can easily get out of the contract IF you choose not to attend by informing them by May 1st. You otherwise have a financial obligation.

Dorm assignments are done by a computer lottery to match student choices sometime in May, with room assignments sent to students before the first SOAR date. Therefore every student has an equal chance of getting their first dorm choice regardless of when their signed Res Halls contract is accepted (some U’s do a first come, first served dorm assignment, UW does not).
