Postponed - How are my chances?

After being postponed my hopes of getting into the University of Minnesota were lowered. So I began to research into how many applicants actually get accepted into the U after being postponed. Couldn't find any answers so I thought I would try my luck here. Also have a few specific questions regarding the chances of me getting accepted.

How many applicants actually get accepted after being postponed?

How can I prove that U of M is one of my main schools that I plan to attend and not just a "backup" school? Will it even matter?

How are my chances? I'm applying to CLA - will plan to apply to other colleges possible.
- I currently have a 3.0 gpa
- 25 ACT (Not great..)
- Involved in DECA
- Been to numerous business conventions
- Staff Writer for the schools newspaper

1) I don't really know how many, hopefully someone will have an idea.

2) Write a letter and request that it be included in your file. Assert that the U is your first choice and that you will absolutely attend if you're accepted (if this is true; if not, don't bother sending the letter). When they review your file again after all initial accept/reject/postpone decisions have been made, it will help to set you apart from others in the postpone pile who may not have made this clear (or for whom it wasn't true). Also, send your semester grades! Hopefully you've been working hard and that will spark their interest. And yes, doing these things does matter -- but try to remember that doing them doesn't mean you'll get in, it just increases your chances slightly. Enough to be worth doing, but not enough that you should expect admission.

That said, it's hard to chance you because your profile is pretty brief. Are you in state or out of state? What's your courseload like? Is your 3.0 weighted or unweighted? Do you have other extracurriculars (you don't need to post a full resume or anything, it'd just be nice to have a rough idea of how involved you are)?

Anyway, hope that helps. Feel free to update your stats and I'll be happy to try and chance you.

I am instate, I believe that is my unweighted GPA.

I've taken 1 AP course, took the test and got a 3
Currently taking business classes and in an advance bible lit & philosophy X class
I've had a part time job ever since sophomore year, (I work at a nursing home) so i dont have much time for extracurricular activites.

If you really want to go, call admissions, tell them your situation, and ask if you can send an essay as part of your application. Most likely they'll allow it and if the essay is good, then it'll make your application stand out. A couple of my friends who were initially postponed last year did this and ended up being accepted.

can someone also chance me after being deferred at cbs?

w gpa 3.6
act: 33
3.92 weighted first semester grades
upward trend
taking 4 ap classes

Woooahhh you were deferred with those stats? I'm gonna say you'll be in. I just can't believe theyd reject a 33 ACT

I hope so, thanks. I think its my class rank that killed me. I was top 35%. Do you think If I dont get into cbs I will at least get into my back up? the liberal arts one?

^Class rank is a not very good, but you will for sure get into CLA if you don't get into CBS.

^I second that! But I'm assuming you'll get into CBS. I'm technically top 11% which translates into like top 25, but i still made it in

Same thing happened to me
I have a 1400 SAT (Cr + M), 8 APs, 3.57 GPA
and got postponed
U of M wasn't my top choice but still ughh

If you were waitlisted you can also try submitting some strong recommendation letters along with a letter of interest.

i'm definitely in the same situation.
i applied to U of M CLA early, & i was just sent a postponement letter.

act- 30
gpa- 3.65
good extracurriculars-track, tennis, volleyball
newspaper staff for 3 years
DECA conference involvement
11 AP classes total

i tried looking up the same statistics & found nothing
i did calculate that only about 20% of all applicants do get in though, by the information they sent. i really didn't know it was so selective, i thought it was about 50%, like UW-Madsion?

^ I'm sorry but I really am having a *** moment about your stats. How in the world could they not accept you????? It seems like you're above their typical applicants. There's no way CLA can be that selective..... I'm sure it's just some weird thing and you'll be admitted eventually.

I am wondering if because of the president's plan to move the U up in the rankings if they aren't postponing lots of applicants until they can see the whole picture of potential students. I think they will admit many from the postponed list like UW did last year. Other factors for their actions might be the size of the class of 2009 and the reported increase in applications to state U's because of the economy.

thanks, that's how i felt too. minnesota was my top choice, and i made that pretty clear. i just hope 2nd semester grades help to sort things out when people start sending them in, i heard it's a big determining factor for postponed applicants.

Hmmm I'm starting the think the only reason I didn't get postponed is completed my app. as early as possible.
Stats:
College:CSOM
ACT: 29
GPA: 3.87 UW
Rank: Top 5 Students=Top 5/10%
Status Accepted

yeah, i think (this year especially) those who sent their apps in early had a really big advantage.

I got postponed as well and i cant help but ask. How do like my chance?
I applied to the IT
32 ACT
3.55 UGPA
Honors science and math
a couple extra curriculars
about 150/800 class rank
a pretty difficult senior schedual
A rising grade trend

That ACT score is right on point, but the GPA is a bit low. I say you have a fairly good chance, but it all depends on the rest of the waitlisted applicants. I'm assuming they're gonna select the best of those so hopefully you'll make it through.
