Potential Applied Math Graduate Programs?

I finished my sophomore year at a small liberal arts college- Virginia Military Institute. I do not plan on commissioning and instead would like to get a PhD in Applied Math. I'm an applied math major with a double minor in computer science and writing. I have a 3.3 cumulative GPA (very bad first year) and a 3.5 math major gpa. I have extensive research experience and have presented at various undergraduate research conferences along the east coast. This summer, I will be conducting more research.

What are the necessary steps I should take this next year to strengthen my application for prestigious grad schools for applied math: Cornell, UCLA, MIT, Rice, etc. Or is there really no chance with my bad start?

Sounds to me like you have a solid enough major GPA and possibly enough research experience to really stand out. I would guess to continue with your research and just apply to these schools in the coming year. Sure, competition is tough. However, with your experience, you are bound to stand out. Look for some good people who can recommend you and I think you will stand a good chance.

Do you have any publications? Have you taken any grad courses? How many months / years of research exactly? Your GPA is a bit low for top schools but if you get As from here on out, you have a shot.
