I was wondering if you any current students could weigh in on the English department at Wellesley.
Any thoughts on the creative writing concentration?
Also, do people ever double minor with a major?
Hi, there! I majored in English at Wellesley, and the department is fantastic. The classes are small and discussion-based, and the professors are incredibly dynamic and knowledgeable. I didn’t take any creative writing classes, though, so I can’t be of help in that area.
It is possible to double minor with a major. You can’t double minor with a double major, though.
@WendyWellesley13 Any courses in the English Department that you would recommend?
Sure! Take everything you can with Lisa Rodensky, because she’s amazing. Super engaging and incredibly smart. I would start with her class on the Victorian novel, since it provides a strong foundation for courses on 20th-century literature. Sarah Wall-Randell is also one of my favorites. Her classes on Milton and Shakespeare are both very good. Francesca Southerden is in the Italian department, but she teaches courses on Dante and Petrarch. I loved her classes, and they can count towards an English major. Kathleen Brogan’s also a good bet in general. Cord Whitaker wasn’t there when I was a student, but I’ve heard he’s very good.
Keep in mind you can take a couple of literature classes outside the English department and count them towards the major as well.
Thank you so much!
