Potential Transfer

Hey guys,

I'm a new poster here on CC but I've been reading posts for a while. I'm a first semester freshman at the College of William and Mary, and I've been thinking of transferring a bit lately. I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me a ballpark admissions outcome and some advice!

First and foremost, I am a UVA legacy. I am not sure if this is as important for transfers, but I figured I should mention it. I am also from out-of-state.

In high school, I had a 3.7 GPA and 2000 SAT. I held leadership positions in 2 honor societies, worked 20 hours a week, played varsity sports, and a host of other minor extracurriculars. I also have a talent for the visual and performing arts, and have won several local and regional awards.

This semester, I have held a 3.62 GPA in 13 credits and I made dean's list. I am majoring in English with a possible double in anthropology. I also hold some leadership positions on campus and am employed by the admissions office. I have art work displayed in the president's collection at the College.

I love my current college, but sometimes I wish for a bit more of a social scene and a less awkward student population. Do you think I have a chance for Fall transfer admissions? I have not yet told my parents about possibly transferring.

Thanks for reading!

Unfortunately, there are a lot of potential complications here.

Firstly, there is the fact that you are out-of-state. Being a legacy may compensate for this somewhat, but I doubt it will make up for it entirely. Also keep in mind that UVa has a guaranteed admission agreement with Virginia community colleges if students meet certain requirements (I believe a 3.4 GPA is one of the criteria). Now, those are factors that you can’t control that would make it difficult for your regardless of your stats.

Secondly, there are the factors that are within your control. Frankly, your GPA is a concern. Your SAT is a bit low for an OOS student as well, but in my experience UVa doesn’t care as much about that particular component as other schools. The fact that you are transferring from an academically comparable institution may make it forgivable, however.

With all that said, definitely apply. I think in your case your solid ECs and a clear passion for the school might be enough to overcome the factors that aren’t in your favor. Do try and get a higher GPA next semester, though.

Thank you, Francis. I will take your advice into consideration.

Not a problem. Honestly, a strong midterm report could really help you. Also, I know W&M has a reputation for grade deflation, so they’ll probably take that into account. Glad I could help!
