Hey guys. So I am hoping to transfer to UCLA next year, this is my second year at a community college. I am applying as an English major. I have been told by my professor that our school will not be offering Spanish 4 (my final prerequisite for the major) in the coming Winter, Spring, or Summer sessions. This means that I will be unable to complete my major classes at my CC, and I believe UCLA has a no-exceptions policy for not completing major prerequisites.

To give some more insight, I will be done with IGETC by the end of Spring, and I will have completed 6 honors classes which I need to be TAP-certified by my school.

umm go to another nearby cc and take spanish 4? check and see if that’s okay before you do, because i know theres something about taking sequence courses all at the same cc…or something like that.

Are there any other options? I’ve tried applying to another nearby CC but it is unlikely I will get the class. Is the requirement that ALL prerequisites must be finished by the time I transfer, or is there some flexibility? On the UCLA admissions site, some majors say that classes X Y and Z MUST be finished, while under English it does not say this.

Don’t take the risk. Try your best to take the class somewhere else. If you can not get into the class then be sure to explain this situation in the comments area on the application.

You are correct, pre-reqs for an English major do not HAVE to be completed (like they do for psychology, economics, sociology, etc.) BUT English is selective major, meaning many more people apply than are admitted so not having completed the pre-reqs will put you at a disadvantage. I would definitely try to take the class.
