Hi all, I’ve decided to commit to GW and now am in the process of choosing a dorm. I’d love to live in Potomac, but I’ve heard that those rooms mostly go to ED kids. I was wondering if it was worth it to put it as my first choice on the housing application or if doing so would ruin my chances of getting any decent dorm.
It’s absolutely worth it! If that’s the dorm you want then there’s no harm in putting it first. The dorm app is kinda like a “wish list” anyway, where they try to match you with dorms towards the top if there’s room at the time your name pops-up.
Good luck!
I thought I read this year was one of the first years they are not giving priority housing to ED students.
That may or may not be the case. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m not a current student so things can slip by without me knowing.
Either way, housing has always operated on a type of “lottery” system in that names and preferences go into a computer, names are drawn, and that student gets their top pick if it is available (and they qualify for the dorm based upon their year/gender/etc). The only deviance to this that I’ve been told (unofficially) is that if you have a dorm on the Mount Vernon campus anywhere on your list that you will inevitably end-up on the Vern. This was the case for me, as my top 1 or 2 were on Foggy but I had one or two on the Vern and ended up in Merriwether (back when it was co-ed).
Hope this helps.
