Potomac Housing Suggestion from GW Housing Program

Did anyone else get this email? If so, what are you doing about it?:

Once again, congratulations on your acceptance to The George Washington University! In reviewing incoming first-year students’ housing preferences, we noticed that you selected Potomac House as your first preference. Based on admit status and the high number of preferences for Potomac House, we highly recommend that you revise your application. Since Early Decision 1 and Early Decision 2 students’ applications are processed first, and because many of these students have preferenced Potomac House as their first choice, we strongly believe that there will be very few spaces in Potomac House for Regular Decision students to be assigned to. Therefore, we suggest that you log back into your housing application (gwhousing.gwu.edu) and update/edit your application by selecting the “edit buildings” link on the left-hand side. We encourage you to consider adding or reordering your building themes so that Potomac House is not listed as your first preference.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Sincerely,

My “S” got it too. Most likely the ED1/ED2’s have listed Potomac as 1st priority such that there won’t be hardly any slots left for RD. I hope they’re telling the truth - not just to get more people signing up for Thurston/MVC.

My “S” revised his list accordingly. I think they’re “trying” to accomodate everyone’s 1st/2nd choice and NOT place you somewhere you don’t wish to be.

Appreciate others comments on this too!

I have a feeling that Housing is trying to send many Freshman to MV, because it has been an overcrowding situation that it was unexpected. Many upperclassmen, including myself, decided to stay in campus housing rather than lloking for the off campus option, and it kind of threw off the department. this is not proven, it is just a thought, but I see a pattern.

Multitasker - I agree on their “Master” plan to house more freshmnan @ MVC. However, a recent e-mail from housing estimates the following for the incoming freshman class - 80% FB, 20% MVC. I think they hoped for more dorm space for freshman @ MVC with the renovated Pelham, but apparently Pelham was so nice - more sophomores are staying there leaving less space for freshman.

I guess we’ll see! Hopefully they won’t have to put some of the students in hotels like some universities do when their formulas don’t work.

Yikes. Looking at Facebook it did seem like Potomac was very popular, but I can’t figure out why they would make people reorder, if it is full don’t they just move down a person’s list???

As lightmom says, Facebook proved that Potomac was quite popular. I checked my email to make sure whether I got a similar message or not (I didn’t preference Potomac, but rather Pelham). Nothing there. So I am definitely seeing the “Master Plan” in its works now. As for Pelham, sophomores filled up the space weeks ago so freshmen have to fill their majority now. I don’t think sophomores took more space than initially assigned, so us freshmen should be fine. It was nice, indeed.

It could also be that they are just trying to set expectations early, since an ED1 group of 541 could easily fill the 379 spots in Potomac if it was that popular. Who knows?

lightmom-what are the totals for ED1/ED2 - any idea?

I tried to look at this before, and this was the best guess based on what was available on the packet.
