Potsdam v. Oneonta

My daughter got into both. She's thinking of early education, but is undeclared and also thinking about Public relations, nursing, business, etc. I think she'll need some tutoring in college, so I think Potsdam's smaller school might be better. Anyone have feedback on these schools?

Oneonta has a little school right on campus; it is excellent for education. I don’t know much about Potsdam. It’s a little more competitive to get into Oneonta. You might want to ask about tutoring resources at both schools; it shouldn’t be a problem at either to hire a grad student or someone who aced the class the year before to tutor.

I think that these two colleges are so similar regarding academics that the decision should be made based on which campus your daughter likes better and the transportation to/from during breaks.

Oneonta has CADE (Center for Academic Development and Enrichment). Students can get tutors for classes for free. The tutors must have had a good grade in the class they are tutoring and been given a reference by a professor. They are also paid, so they take it seriously.

Oneonta has great education, business and communications (w/ public relations minor) programs. They are three of the most popular majors. Oneonta does not have nursing however.

Oneonta’s campus is usually sited as one of the most beautiful SUNY campuses.

True, but keep in mind that every SUNY has tutors (and a Center for Academic Development and Enrichment), and a Career Center.

The OP should visit both campuses and see which one fits her needs better. Consider the travel to and from school during breaks. Consider the surrounding area. Consider the list of Majors and Minors offered. Perhaps spend a night at each campus (set up an overnight on-campus stay through the admission’s office). After the visit, you’ll have a better idea which school is a better fit for her.

Thank you all so much. Everyone has given us help in deciding. They both sound like good schools and we’ll decide by looking more closely at each of them and maybe even spend a night.
Thanks to all!
