Closing Information, U.Va.

if you are trying to reach someone at UVa today, electric power and internet service has been out at times in some areas because of the storm.

What is the snow total? I have some great pictures from 2009

10 inches as of 7 am this morning

Thanks for the link. I hope the storm will pass quickly and everyone can back to normal.

The sun is making an appearance, the snow is already melting off of trees and plows have been by. I imagine things will be back to business as usual soon.

Our southern daughter has really enjoyed seeing all the snow (even though her power was out for a considerable amount of time). I think what she enjoyed even more, though, was having classes canceled on the day she had two scheduled midterms! ;)

Brown College has some hilarious pictures going around facebook - they made an igloo (this is the 2nd time this has happened in the past 15 or so years) and a dragon… :)

I thought D’s power was back on, but it turns out it’s been out since 6:40 a.m. She said it flickered around 5:30 p.m. She’d love to be able to study, but can’t get hooked up to the Internet.

The igloo sounds “cool” (pun intended), Hazelorb! :D

15" inches of snow

Aquamarinesea, I didn’t know you had a student at UVa? The total S2 gave me earlier in the day was much lower, but then he was just estimating.

Sorry your DD was out of power for so long jc40! S2 is still on grounds this year and had power back by the time I talked to him at 2ish. As much as I wish he’d been able to enjoy the snow, he was quite pleased with the time to get ahead on hw and a paper due after spring break. He’s pledging this semester so no time goes wasted. Smart choice.

What is a considerable amount of time?

@ Golf Father - jc40’s D lives off grounds so her time frame w/o power is probably going to be different then what students on grounds experienced. Based on the email from Pat Lampkin yesterday most of the power outages on grounds were concentrated in the first year residential area (although S2 lives on the opposite side of grounds and was out as well). The priority was to restore any outages at the hospital and medical facilities first. I’m sure you got and read the same email.

She also noted at 2:30 there was 10" of snow so it looks like my son was spot on with his estimation. He said the snow had stopped.

I live behind the Corner in an apartment complex on 15th Street and as of ~11:15 AM this morning my power was still out. It came on for about 3 minutes at 10 AM today and then flicked back off. Everyone around us has power though.

Also, here are three pictures I took yesterday morning:

http://i.imgur.com/YhmBrNU.jpg

@ Knights - Beautiful images! Thanks so much for sharing. You should send these to Lawnlife. They are on tumblr & twitter and feature great photography on grounds.

We had about 9 inches of snow in town yesterday and a lot of it melted in the afternoon, as the snow turned to rain. Temperatures should be in the high 50s tomorrow and through the weekend, so what’s left should be gone soon.

An email went around yesterday in the early evening saying that power would be back soon, so I’m assuming things are back to normal in the residence halls.

Wintergreen, the ski resort about 45 minutes away, got over a foot. The ski and snowboard team members are probably thrilled. Wintergreen isn’t allowed to make snow after March 1st, so the ski season has been extended!

knights09…You must live in the same complex as my D. She said it was out for 30 hours! She had enough hot water in the tank to shower but had to go to her sorority house to dry/style her hair. The pictures were lovely, BTW.

DeanJ…I’m hopeful our D will get to ski before she graduates next May. I didn’t even know there was a resort close to UVA. She’s skiied in New England and NM but that’s it. I’ll be curious to hear how she thinks VA skiing compares.

Wintergreen is about 45 minutes away (at a considerably higher elevation). I bet the Outdoor Adventure Club organizes trips for people who aren’t on the ski and snowboard team.

We’re down to asphalt and grass this morning. :)
