As most of you know, the New England area was hit with a massive snowstorm which resulted in power outages everywhere, including Northampton and Smith College.

The parents' Facebook page has featured some updates and anecdotal information. Drop by if you are a Smith parent or have something to add.

I just requested membership in the group. What I do know is what my daughter has experienced in her house so far: because Smith has some generators, there is electricity for the common room and for the hallways, there is no heat except for the propane fireplace in the common room–layered clothing is definitely in! Smith is closed for classes tomorrow and they’re hoping for electricity by tomorrow night. All of Northampton is without power and closed down. UMass did lose its power for a while but it’s back on. I know that part of Amherst is also without power as Hampshire College, where my niece is enrolled, is also closed and hoping to open again Wednesday.

I am on that site as well…parents are pounding the school for lack of communication with students and parents…not sure what they could have done differently given the lack of power and internet…daughter said they were getting info by word of mouth through the head resident…also a few girls got texts…that is those who had service and power in their phones. Will be interested to hear administration’s response.

All that aside, daughter’s account of the weekend made it sound more like an adventure than a hardship. They walked into town and got some hot food, played a lot of games and watched a movie on someone’s fully charged laptop. Fodder for nostalgia at some future reunions.

Looks like power and internet are fully restored. Got an e-mail from our daughter. I’d say they are ahead of a lot of Noho and Western MA at this point.
