Just got a laptop yesterday, a sony vaio the cw series and I plugged it in today got it started and all, and, after using it for about 3 hrs the screen went dark and it made this buzzing noise until I shut the computer off. The thing is the same thing happened last semester, also with a brand new laptop, which I exchanged for store credit. I used that to buy my new laptop. Now that this happened AGAIN I thought I might be doing something wrong, or I just have the worst luck in the entire world with technology. But my aunt called me and asked if I had something called a power surge b/c not having one could be the problem. But I no one I know uses one so I don't think that's the problem? I'm convinced its something I am doing but just thought I'd ask if anyone has one, also, I live in kinsolving if that means anything...

Most power strips have power surge protection, so you could pick up one of those.

^Yeah thats what I meant to say sorry (power surge protector/power strip), but like I said no one I know who lives in my dorm and others uses one so I’m thinking random power surges (if thats whats happening) aren’t the problem, cuz no one I know experiences them, including my room mate. I think I’m going to get one and see if my computer crashes again, but I doubt it will help. Thanks tho~

Google “buzzing noise laptop”. You are not the only one who has this problem, however, there is no one single cause.

Take the laptop back to the store where you bought it and exchange it for another one. It is unlikely that a power surge or anything that you did caused the buzzing. As long as the laptop still looks new, you shouldn’t have a problem exchanging it for another one.

As for using a power surge protector, they are cheap and it wouldn’t hurt to have one.

I don’t think that a surge would cause something like that, it seems like more of a hardware defect. if a continuous supply of power is needed, then it would make sense for a surge to fry the laptop (actually with newer parts and technology, even power surges are HIGHLY unlikely to damage your computers). But since the laptop uses a battery as the actual source of power, and the DC wall outlet to power the battery, it shouldn’t make a difference.

Is it fine later?

Any chance it is overheating? Are you always in the same place, in the same position, with the same model laptop when this happens? Maybe your position or the position the laptop is in blocks the vent things of this particular model of computer? (I had this problem in one particular spot that I like to sit in with one of the laptops I have used.) Just a thought. I am not a laptop expert, just a laptop user.

^Yes I’m always in the same place, but I keep the laptop on a desk without anything near it, not on my lap or in a blanket where it could get overheated, but I’m just going to exchange it for a new one this weekend if I have time, if it is overheating then I would need to exchange it anyways since I was only using it for about an 1hr and 1/2, but it’s perfectly fine now though. But I’m still just going to exchange it :P
