PR Error ID

Okay I got this one correct, though not completely sure why it is correct:

Rachel [was able] to make her high school's varsity cross country team [as a freshman] because [she ran] 5 miles every morning and [had done] 100 sit-ups a day. [No error]

I'll let you guys figure out first. Post explanation as well.

Try this one too:

[Because of the recent [increase in] property values, [how] [one] can find inexpensive housing [within a week] is a puzzle to me. [No error]

Additional question: would it be idiomatic to say the artist's "fasination with"?

One last question:

Even though I [was never] on the slopes before, I assumed that I'd be able to cathc on pretty quickly.

(A) was not <-----(not the same, actually a improving paragraphs question)
(B) could not have been
(C) never had not been
(D) have not been
(E) had never been

^Got the problem correct, though not completely sure why the choice I chose was the best (or in my case, got down to 2, so "better" <--the need to use proper grammer).
