Practical Classes?

was wondering if anyone knew of classes that would be really useful for every day life...like a personal finance class. or business etiquette...that sort of stuff.

Yeh, no. Not at Duke. Most full classes at Duke are a bit more... academic in nature than that. (maybe like a house course or something? I know that there is a wine tasting class that is offered to seniors every once in a while but again it isn't a course but simply something people sign up to do)

Econ 182 - Financial Accounting

Econ 193 - Managerial Finance

MMS185 - Managerial Finance

Econ 181 - Corporate Finance

Econ 166 - Global Capital Markets

Econ 168 - Asset Pricing & Risk Management

From that list, Econ 182 and MMS 185 are probably the more basic classes -- and definitely worth taking even if you're not an econ major/MMS person. I feel like the others need pre-reqs. Look around at special topics courses for MMS dept (either coded as MMS, sometimes as Soc) because those are really relevant and practical.

are they rigorous? i've never taken an econ class in my life, but i also just want some basic life skills for managing money.

Econ 182 - Financial Accounting requires that you do the practice problems and tests. If you do, you will be fine.

Econ 183 - Managerial Accounting is the next level, and the same strategy applies.

MMS185 - Managerial Finance; From what I hear it is not incredibly difficult

Econ166 is being offered for the 1st time or at least for the 1st time in a while, so I cannot really comment on it.

The rest require a great deal of pre-reqs
