Practical Questions

I understand you can go to your local Bed, Bath & Beyond now, pick out the stuff you want, pay for it (i.e., "gee dad, that'll be 400 bucks"), then when you get to NJ go to the local Bed, Bath and they'll have it all packaged and ready for you. You simply show your receipt, grab your packages and walk out. This seems like the way to go. Why risk the NJ store not having what you want, why deal with a last minute feeding frenzy, why wait in line, etc.?

My questions, though, have to do with what to buy...and in what sizes. For example, what size are the dorm room beds/what size sheets do you need? Is every bed in every freshman dorm the same size, or should I wait to see which dorm is assigned? Are two sets enough? What size comforter? How many towels? What am I forgetting?

I looked at the "Meet Your Dorm" page and saw nothing responsive to this. If anyone has a link to a list of dorm room essentials, please post it. If any sophomore or other veteran has helpful hints, it would be great if you could post them. Please feel free to elaborate as to what you and your friends may have learned the hard way.

TIA

Oops. I should have done this search before I posted.

Anyway, here's a list of possibles. But I'd still like to know what's essential and what isn't.

And also, how big are the rooms? It wouldn't be good to show up with more stuff than the room can accomodate.

You will be fitted to your standard-sized bed when you sign in.

Your bed comes with a mattress and that's it. There's some deal about the beds being "very long" or whatever, but really, you can't really go wrong by much.

Extra-long linens for your bed. I guess you could try to make another size fit, but it's not worth the trouble. It's more comfortable and easier to make (if you're into that).

Rooms vary in size, so you can't know what to expect until you receive your housing assignment.

The biggest thing is probably the extra-long linens for the beds in college, since the mattresses at universities are all extra-long.

Eh, I used regular twin and it was fine. And cheaper.

My brother said his dorm provided linens for the bed ... so if they don't, I'm in trouble.

Well, this is kind of a practical question, but does Bank of America have a branch on campus in case someone wanted to withdraw some money? I don't want to end up withdrawing money from some other bank and paying a fee of $2 or something. If Bank of America doesn't have an on campus branch, what banks do?

BofA has a branch close by (5 minute walk or something like that?), but it's not ON campus.

there's a BofA atm in Frist, and a branch on nassau (from mathey/rockey, the one on nassau is actually probably closer than the one at Frist), and the dorms do not provide linens, so don't count on that, you will need to provide your own

B of A is definitely the most convenient. Its the closest bank (national) on Nassau and is maybe a 2 minute walk from Holder. And as jss said, there is also one at Frist and since most students go to Frist every day its pretty convenient. You can also deposit money to BofA at frist using the ATM so if you live downcampus its very convenient.

Yea, I switched from citizen's to BoA bcuz there is no citizen's in p'ton. I like their student edge account, it's a pretty sweet deal.

But I'm curious, if I requested a single room, what's the likelihood of me getting one?

Depends on the college you're in -- and they're assigned randomly.

Do you bring your own pillow? Blankets?

yup, all they provide is a mattress

How are the mattresses? Should we bring a featherbed/mattress topper?

if you have one, you probably would want to bring it. the mattresses are firm.

(btw, what up, im back on CC after a year)

Kids: Don't bring too much stuff. Try to live as minimalist. Nine months from now you will have to do something with your stuff when you go on summer break.

yeah, my featherbed was a life saver...then again, I'm a wimp when it comes to uncomfortable bedding, lol. and yeah....moving out...not fun...I left a TON of stuff in storage...

as far as what to bring--coordinate with your roomate(s) so you don't all bring the same things! no need for 3 TVs/irons/whatever.
