Practice Rooms

Hello,

I 'm an incoming freshman moving in in a couple days. I'm really excited! But there's just one issue...

Practice rooms!!! I read they're only for majors at NU. When I visited this summer I asked about getting access to practice rooms for non music majors. The tour guide didn't know much about this issue, but I got to go around and see them at least. So there are three places - bee hive, Regenstein Hall, and this really old-looking building that said Willard but it wasn't actually Willard. Well, to be honest, I wasn't really impressed by this "bee hive" building, and poor "Willard" looks like he's falling apart, but Regenstein was realy amazing.

So, like I said, I'm not a music major, but I really want to get access to practice rooms. I play on the piano, it's been one of my life ambitions, but I just can't afford to major in it unfortunately. I really love playing - it's fun and relaxing, but also important to me on a deeper level too. I really don't want to give it up, but if all practice rooms are for music majors only, what's a person like me to do?

Is there anyone else in my situation? Did anyone have any luck getting access as a non major? I'm kind of hoping for something a bit better then the bee hive... I mean, I really don't want to be pushing it, but I've been at the bee hive and I really don't think that it's even worth trying to get access there. Again I don't want to offend or be so self righteous, I know I'm not majoring in music and should be lucky to get access to a 12 note electric keyboard. But still, please try to understand - I've been playing for 6 years, and I know I'm not as good as half the people who've only played for 2, but nevertheless, piano has become a very improtant part of my life and I kind of need one that sounds good for the experience of playing it to be meaningful.

So can anyone offer me some help/advice? I'm wondering about these kinds of things:

Is there a way non music majors can get legit access to practice rooms?
Are practice rooms kept locked?
Are there classes I could sign up for to get access?

And any other advice you can give to someone in my situation. Thanks, and I'm really sorry to the real music majors here, but please understand where I'm coming from.

Also sorry the message is kinda long :-o

I do believe there are plenty of opportunities for non-music majors to participate in orchestra and whatnot but beyond that, I’m afraid I don’t know any more.

there is a practice room in foster walker as well

To the OP:
Try posting this question on the Music Major forum. I have no doubt that you will end up finding out more about practice rooms at Northwestern than you will ever need! Good luck.

Thanks for asking this, OP. I’ve been wondering about this, too. I’ve played piano for about 10 years now and would love to continue to play at NU, but I’m not a music major. I’ve read that my residence hall has a piano in the main lounge, but I sort of wanted something more private, since 1) I’m self-conscious about playing in front of other people and 2) I don’t want my fellow residents to be annoyed by my playing. I reallllllly hope there’s somewhere I can practice.
