Assignment: Do you agree with the idea that being reilient in response to challenge or failure is essential for success? In an essay, support your position by discussing an example (or examples) from literature, science and technology, the arts, current events, or your own experiences or observations.

Failure and success are subjective terms that are determined solely on viewer perception. In response to failure or challenge, one must be resilient and determined in order to attain success. Failure is a fundamental step that precedes eventual success. This universal concept is prevalent in modern society and within literature. The novel, The Scarlet Letter, and the Great Depression serve as excellent examples of failure or challenge as essential aspect before success.

Hester Prynne, percieved as an outsider in her community, is the predominant character in Nathaniel Hawthorne's, The Scarlet Letter. We witness Hester's progresion and involvement in society throughout the novel. identified as an outcast by the Puritan community, from her engagement in an extramarital affair, Hester is ostraczied and clearly condemned by her peers. She is publicaly shamed and forced by the people of Boston to wear a badge of humiliatio, a letter 'A' to represent 'Adulterer.' hester is obviously a failure to society, evidenced through her activity and her peers response. Although she is defeated, hester is redilient, defies her social reputation and achieves eventual success and acceptance. Her letter 'A' undergoes a transformation from initially meaning 'Adulterer' to 'Able.' She determinedly integrates the sin into her life and advances her role in society. She cares for the poor and is eventually viewed as a mother figure to the community. Initially a failure, her resilience, intelligence, capability and extraordinary circumstances enable her to achieve success through the community's acceptance.

Another example of failure as a fundamental step to success is evidence through the Great Depression. This time period in America from the 1930's to early 1940's was marked by economic turmoil, loss of jobs, housing, and the most essential parts of life. Daunting morale and pessimism loomed as America witnessed the biggest economic failure to take place. Although America experience failure as a result of the Great Depression, economic success eventually followed. Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt demonstrated proactivity and determination. Legislation was enacted to correct the wrongs of the past and new programs were developed to create jobs and support the welfare of the people. Garneing the support of the people, Roosevelt was able to revers the condition of America and restore it to its once prosperous state

Overall, being resilient in response to challenge or failure is essential to attaing success. Hester in the Scarlet Letter and the Great Depression both epitomize this concept. One can always achieve success and stability through determination and defying odds.
