Practice test result accuracy

Hello again!! I know this has probably been asked loads of times but I just need to know what others have experienced. How accurate are practice test results say the Barrons or Kaplan CATs?? Are they more difficult than the actual GRE? Do you tend to score better on the real thing than you do on these practice tests?

I'm scoring above 750 on quant and verbal is between 600-660. I generally screw up in RC if I get one of those awful passages about heavy duty literature or law. I just dont get those!!! I have no way of being certain about how my exam might go!! I'm sorry for all the blabbering but I'm quite nervous about my GRE which is day after tomorrow.. To know this would help calm my nerves slightly!! Thanks soooo much..

For the Quantitative, I found the real test to be easier than Kaplan/Barrons practice CATs for Quantitative. e.g. for Q, I always score upper 600s lower 700s on those CATs but I received 790 on real test.

Verbal was pretty close: I scored 600-700 on various CATs, but on the real thing I got 660.

However, most accurate estimate of what you may get on real deal is doing the ETS PowerPrep CATs.

Good luck!

Agree - the Barron's quant is a bit harder than the actual GRE.

Download the PowerPrep package from ETS - it has two tests that are virtually identical to the real thing.

I did about 50 points higher on the verbal GRE as compared to practice tests. My quantitative scores were pretty accurate.

Pretty accurate for me too for both sections, although I did slightly worse on my verbal than predicted.

Thanks everyone.. but did any of you feel your scores differed by say 20-40 points cuz of the topic of the RCs you got..

Also, were you able to finish all the sections- verbal, quant and AWA- within the time limit..??

PowerPrep was dead on for me.

I guessed one question on the Quant and ran out of time for the last two.

No problems for Verbal or AW. Don't worry about the topics, BTW. The readers are interested in structure and sense - there's nothing to prepare for beyond being aware of "standard" essay format:

1) Reword the prompt with your take on it
2) Say what you're going to say and how it supports your position.
3) Say it (in 3 or 4 paragraphs)
4) Say what you just said
5) Reword the prompt, saying how it supports (2)

Use complex sentences and if you're not sure how to spell a word pick another word.

Thanks.. If powerprep was dead on for u williamc then i really hope it works out like that for me too.. or maybe better.. I'll get to know tomorrow evening.. will post my scores from the GRE day after tomorrow.. Hope I do well!! Lets hope my backside doesnt go numb sitting in the test center for 4 hrs!!

Both PowerPrep tries: 800Q/550V. Actual test: 800Q/550V.
