Is it better to take:
1. full practice test timed?
or
2. full practice test not timed?
or
3. individual sections timed?
or
4. individual sections without time?

I have taken each of these approaches, but I need a definite answer so that I stop wavering incessantly. I have a PR 2010 book and a PR 2011 book and the BB. And does it matter if a book is an edition older?

Everyone’s going to have slightly differing opinions on this, but in my opinion, it is simply not practical to take a full practice timed test. The very thought of doing so was daunting to me and discouraged me from getting any practice in. I personally didn’t have a lot of time to practice and certainly didn’t practice much, but the prospect of taking individual tests made practicing seem a lot more plausible.

Also, ALWAYS time yourself. If you go past the time limit, keep going, but keep note of how much time that was exceeded.
