Praise for journalism program?

Good morning, all!

DD has decided that she definitely wants to attend a school with a top-notch journalism program. She is a likely-NMF, and UA has long been at the top of my list of suggested schools – for obvious reasons!

The problem? UA’s journalism program is not coming up on any of the lists that I can find of top undergraduate journalism programs. Is that because UA’s journalism program just isn’t very strong, or perhaps because its reputations hasn’t caught up with its excellence (I’m fishing here!)

Any thoughts on Bama’s journalism program, especially as related to an Honors-level student interested in a writing track? Thanks! :)

I don’t know a lot about journalism at Bama since my kids are STEM majors…

But, I do know that one of my sons took an honors class (First Person Writing) by a J prof and it was an awesome class.

I know that one or two journalism students were able to write the story about the Tornadoes and the story made the cover of Sports Illustrated.

A national panel of journalism educators has named The University of Alabama’s Multicultural Journalism Program the winner of the Journalism Education Association’s 2011 Diversity Award.

There are 2 tracks for J majors …and 3 tracks for J minors

A journalism major must complete 120 hours for graduation, 34 of which must come courses in the major. All journalism majors complete basic courses in journalism, including news writing and reporting, editing and beat reporting. From there, journalism majors may select from two tracks: general and visual.
Journalism Major: General Track

The general journalism track builds on the fundamental skills students have acquired in introductory and 300-level courses. The general track might include courses in advanced reporting, magazine writing, depth reporting, international journalism, digital production and media law and ethics.
Journalism Major: Visual Track

The visual journalism track includes courses in reporting across media, intermediate and advanced photojournalism, advanced editing and design, digital media and photography.

3 J Minors…

Bama’s Tisch Undergraduate Services for the College of Communication and Information Services…named for Steve and Jamie Tisch (Steve is from the same Tisch family that NYU Tisch is named for). Jamie Tisch is a Bama grad. Steve is a producer (‘‘Forrest Gump,’’ ‘‘Risky Business’’ and ‘‘The Long Kiss Goodnight.’’)

Frankly, I don’t think the undergrad is as important as the grad school. Many successful journalists today go on to grad school at one of the top J-Schools…like Columbia, etc.

I would suggest visiting Bama to find out more…

If you decide to visit Bama, this is what you need to do…

set up a campus tour time online…try for the early morning one.

Just a thought - and not related to UA, but I can’t imagine getting a journalism degree without a second major to support it; Finance, Fashion, Law, Poly Sci, International Affairs… something to have some authority on a topic…

M2K – thank you very much for your thoughtful response. You’ve given me a lot of information to sort through. I’m hoping to convince D to at least visit!

And Gojack – I agree. And Bama’s generous AP credit policy would make a double major pretty doable.

Thanks!

Google Howell Raines and Reece Davis . Two UA alums in media. Just two examples of success in journalism. actually UA’s school of Communications is top notch.
