I'm interested in Pratt's Writing for Publication, Performance and Media program, but I've never really heard anything about it. Anyone have any insight/opinions about this program and/or the school in general? Thanks!

my concern is Pratt's location...despite what you may read/hear IMHO it is still a marginal area.

Pratt is the best! My best friend went to Pratt and she loves it there. The immediate area surrounding Pratt is nice but if you go 5-6 blocks down it can be sketch, but it’s not a problem at all. The schools REALLY nice and the best thing is all the cool people; since it’s an art school, it’s full of chill and unique people (unlike a lot of other schools). And a big plus is that it’s in New York, which makes the experience all that much better.
Additionally all the programs there are top notch, I think Pratt is rated in the top 5 or 10 in art schools.

If I had to pick an art school to go to I would most definitely pick Pratt.

Re Pratt's "marginal neighborhood": My daughter was in Pratt's pre-college art program this summer. We spent a week in Brooklyn before and a week after the program, exploring the area. Just like any other college set in an urban environment, you need to use common sense.

But my 17-year-old daughter traveled all over the area via bus and subway with friends and had no problems. In fact, Brooklyn has had a revival in the last several years and boasts fantastic cafes, boutiques, and one of the most beautiful museums and botanical gardens you'll ever see. Not to mention a breathtaking view from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

Around the corner from the campus are several blocks containing all the signs of gentrification -- yoga studios, real estate offices, espresso shops and upscale grocery stores. I felt safe with her walking around there for dinner and shopping.

For a student considering a career as a writer, Brooklyn is like Mecca -- the one-time home of people like Walt Whitman, Truman Capote and Norman Mailer and current home of Jonathan Safer Foer.

Pratt (as my daughter found) is definitely geared toward fine arts types. But if you don't mind being in the minority as a writer type, the campus is lovely and the students seem to love their school.

Pratt is within NYPD Patrol Brooklyn North. Specifically covered by 88th Precint.

Yes, the area is safer.

I lived in Brooklyn for over 20+ years. I went to Brooklyn Technical HS (DeKalb Av) and LIU on Flatbush.

Pratt is a great school. Just be careful walking around. I do not know what your definition of "safe" is. IMHO these statistics do not support any notion of "safe".
