How important is the pre advisor to an incoming freshmen? I tried to look the person assigned to my son on jumbo access but the professor is not listed. The professor teaches a subject my son would not want to major in. Does this matter? thanks

pre-advisor meaning, faculty advisor for freshman year until you choose a major advisor? I've never heard the term "pre-advisor", perhaps it's just me

^ Yeah, I'm pretty sure they mean their advisor that's pre-major...

well, i was given a prof that taught French, even though I'm IR and Econ, and I've had no problems at all. Basically what that advisor does is just make sure you're filling your requirements and taking at least 4 credits a semester. Even though they may not know what your major requirements are (and really, you should take it upon yourself to figure it out), you'll probably mostly be filling distribution requirements first anyway. Besides, when I told her I was taking some class or other that my peer leaders told me fit really well and we weren't sure if it fit the Humanities or Social Sciences requirement, she just pulled out an Academic Bulletin and checked. No biggie.

The advisor also gives you clearance to register, so you have to run your tentative schedule by them first. Meaning, SIS literally will not allow you to register until you're approved by your advisor, and it's your registration time. (Um, and sometimes if it's ten minutes AFTER your registration time...but that's just because SIS sucks.) But when I couldn't meet with mine I just emailed it to her, and she OK'ed me.

sorry yes I mean pre major advisor for freshmen. The other question I had was if all prof's are rated by their students for the professor reviews?

for the official reviews, the professors are rated by all students who were in class that day. for ratemyprofs or whatever, no. The Official Reviews that are up are for classes that were taught in Fall Semester 05. They haven't put up Spring 06 reviews yet. But of course, some professors are going to be teaching different classes this fall, and may be better suited towards teaching some subject material than others.

Thanks I learned so much from this message board. Thanks for your input

how does registration for classes work for the incoming freshman? Is there an order or is it first come first serve or what?

Each advising group is given a registration time - you can't do it all at once or it'll flood the server. The first time, I met with my group in Eaton (the main computer lab) and our peer leaders helped us navigate SIS Online, taught us the trick of putting in call numbers instead of looking up the courses one by one, etc. It's really fast because it's online.

Ariesathena -- is it possible for you to clear some of your inbox on CC so that we can send questions? It said it was currently at capacity. Thanks :)
