Pre-Biz Econ

Hey all, I was trying to search for it, but I couldn't find it; someone earlier mentioned some econ classes NOT to take your first quarter at UCLA, because if you do poorly on them, you aren't going to be able to get into the Biz-Econ major. I think it was Econ 1 or Econ 2 ... If someone could give some advice on that I'd appreciate it.

Secondly, for someone who wants to "test the waters" of economics - of not having any high school experience with econ, what is a good class to take first quarter at UCLA to try it out? Thanks.

i think this is the thread you are looking for:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=200135&highlight=schedule+bizecon%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=200135&highlight=schedule+bizecon</a></p>

as for your second question, econ 1 and 2 are the most basic economics courses (micro and macro econ)

If yuo wanna "test the waters" for econ, Econ 1 is a great class to take. The professor I had, Bresnock, was a good lecturer and had great notes. Also, Econ 1 is NOT a prerequisite for Econ 2, but I highly recommend you do Econ 1 before 2., because I did 2 then 1 and had a hard time; EC 1 seemed more introductory than EC 2 (and I needed an intro class cuz I never had Econ in high school).

the 2 classes required to get into biz/econ are econ 11 and econ 101. you will need to take econ 1 and 2 before you can even take 11/101 so you should already know after taking 2 if you wanna jump into econ or not.

I would not recommend taking Management 1A your first quarter.

Why do you reccommend Management 1A?

i think you misread it locknload...brandnew2 DOESN'T recommend it...it seems to be a hard class to take first quarter.

Ah, thanks :)

when would you recommend taking management 1a? would winter quarter of your second year be considered kind of late?

i'm afraid of taking gardner next quarter. do you think there would be a different professor for winter?

From what I hear, Gardner's a good management prof. I didnt have her though; I had Litt for 1A. He doesnt teach very well, but getting an A or B in his class is very doable. His final was ridiculously easy, and I'm pretty sure I could've gotten a B or A in the midterm if only I had studied for it better.

My roommate had Ravetch for Mgmt 100; doesnt recommend him cuz he was really hard.

All of the major management professors (Ravetch, Lit, Gardener) have very different teaching styles. I've personally had only Gardener and her style of teaching didn't fit me well at all. But then again, there are people that like her a lot--you can probably tell this from the fact that her bruinwalk reviews are very mixed.

Gardener is kind of funny, tends to joke around a lot in class and seems light-hearted, but I like a more no-nonsense approach. A lot of times throughout the quarter she would say "My 7 year old daughter could learn this" or something like that--sometimes it felt like she was teaching like how she would teach a 7 year old. She also tended to over-simplify a lot of the concepts, which made her tests difficult if you didn't have any previous accounting background going into the class.
