Pre-Biz vs. Pre-Med!

Right now I'm a freshman who is struggling with deciding between Pre-Biz and Pre- Med! I know that both are very different but I really want to do Pre- Med because I've always thought that its the most fulfilling job that anyone could ever have. The aspect of interacting with patients and making an impact in others lives make me feel like I'm contributing to society.

However I know that MCB is VERY VERY competitive and getting into a Med school is nearly impossible if you don't have freakishly high GPA like 3.9. I don't really want to do business but I'm not exactly sure what other options I have if Pre- Med doesn't work if I don't have a high enough GPA. With the 50% admissions to Haas, business isn't even easier to declare like it is a other schools. I was just thinking that Business is versatile degree and was possibly thinking of specializing in finance. So now I'm in a predicament and I'm not sure what to do. I've talked to L and S already but they haven't really helped me at all.

People have told me that I don't need to decide until later but Haas admissions is next year, which doesn't give me much time to decide and pre-reqs for MCB is crazy with chem/math/bio/physics. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!:)

I know a person in Haas who is pre-med. not sure if that helps or not

do pre-med if you like pre-med. you also need a pretty high gpa to get into haas as well. might as well get the high gpa in the subject you like.

You do not have to be MCB to be pre-med. I don’t know why people keep assuming this.

Major is totally inconsequential as a lead-in for medical school; if you have satisfied the prerequisites, you are just as well-off.

I’m too tired to look up the link, but the average GPA for a med school matriculant is closer to a 3.6, not a 3.9. Look it up on the amcas website.

To be competitive for med school (especially for CA residents), you need a 3.7+.

Go ahead and do the pre-haas track, and perhaps take chem 1a, bio1b, etc down the road and see how they go. You can pretty much pick up “pre-med” at any time. Only do MCB if you really want to do MCB. There are other biology majors in L&S and CNR, and even if you end up going to Haas, that won’t exactly look bad to med schools.

Well Right now I’m signed up for chem 1A, Math 1A, some history class, and a 2 unit P/NP class. Would that look bad to Haas since I’m not taking another haas Pre-req besides math 1a? I’m planning to take UGBA 10, ochem, and math 1B, and a breadth req next semester.

I believe Haas accepts math 16A-B as well as 1A-B (and I don’t think they have any preference (and nor do medical schools)). You probably should take the 16 series.
