Pre-Business Economics

I've heard bad things about this major..

Is it a good idea to go to UCLA as a Pre-Business Economics? Or would it be better to attend UCI for Business Information Management. Or Berkeley as a spring admit for Pre-Business major?

Also, could someone who's majoring in this just tell me about his/her experience?

Greatly appreciated.

The majors are different. What YOU need to do is look through the courses they entail and from there you’ll get a feel for what each will teach you. Biz-Econ is very accounting-like from my impression, but it’s on you to do your due diligence and I think looking at the course curriculum is the best way. Let us know what you find too (compare/contrast the majors)!

What kind of bad things are you hearing? Each major/campus has its advantages and drawbacks. BizEcon at UCLA is exceptionally cut-throat and the business program at UCI is fairly new. Pick a campus you like and learn to live with the bad along with the good.

There’s nothing inherently “bad” about the major.

The most often cited argument against Bus-Econ is that it isn’t a “Business” major. Now let’s reflect for a moment. Even if it wasn’t (though I don’t intend to insinuate that it is), this is like saying, “Law is a bad major because it isn’t Chemistry!” Or it could be akin to saying, “Math is a bad major because it isn’t English!”

Do you get what I’m saying? Claiming Bus-Econ is a bad major because it isn’t Business is poorly wording it. You make it sound as if the faculty/department is relatively inferior in comparison to other majors when in fact what you mean is that it might no best suit a person intending to major in Business. This argument has been extensively debated.

I can say with certainty that, as much as it may or may not suit a Business major, Bus Econ IS a good major. I don’t know where the statistics are but I believe the starting wage for Bus Econ is better than Econ majors at UCLA. (I’ve even heard its better than an Econ major from Berkeley. That speaks miles because they have higher wages in the Bay area.) Relatively speaking, Bus Econ is a good major. It just isn’t “good” in the way some people want it to be.
