Pre-Chosen topic or topic of your choice?

I began writing an my essay on the, "Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence," prompt.

My essay was about a fictional character, but it sort of turned on not so much of why he was an influence , but rather why I admired him.

Should I stick with this topic or should I do "Topic of your choice?" I don't know if the essay is different enough from the original topic that it warrants a different topic.

The best way to answer the assigned essay is to make sure you don’t stray from the question. Part of the reason you are asked to write an essay is to see how well you can take direction and articulate your thoughts. One option is to refocus your initial essay to better fit the question.

The other option is to choose a completely different topic. You have the freedom here to choose a unique topic that doesn’t trace back to something they’ve read hundreds of times. While your answer may be original, they’ve probably read essays on that topic before. This is your opportunity to show the admissions counselors who you are and what you’re all about. Choose something uniquely characteristic to your interests and values. Hope this helps!
