I am a junior and I want to major in photography. I've been thinking about taking a the six week pre-college program at RISD, but there are so many programs at all these highly acclaimed colleges, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I guess the most important factor for me is the quality of the program for photographers. Also I plan to build up most of my portfolio while at the program. The following are the ones I've been considering, along with RISD. Thank you for reading.

wow fast replies! Yes I have read that neat thread, I was hoping for information on what college has a program that is best for future photography majors. I'm sorry if this is all too specific.

for what it's worth, I loved the photo faculty at SCAD, and there is a 4 or 6 week pre-college program. Also, the kids will be treated like royalty because, lets face it, the schools are out to market and self promote themselves.

is the kid into art? I know some of these precollege programs require a portfolio for admission ... even if s/he's never done photography s/he can send slides of other medium and prob get into the photography program

There are usually courses at local community colleges or art museums that offer courses that would be a good place for a beginner to start. Pre-college is usually for junior or rising senior who is considering art/design school.

I believe (check website to be sure) that Penn State has a short, 1-week course for beginners in photography. I think NYU does also. In addition, University of the Arts and School of Visual Arts have longer (6-8 week) courses for photography.

You want to look at SVA and SAIC for summer photo programs. I have found RISD's pre-college summer program to be inconsistent. Often they hire grad. students to teach in their summer program. RIT has an amazing photo dept. but you would need a car for taking photos while at RIT. The campus is located in an isolated suburb of Rochester. The campus is very unattractive. I am not sure who RIT hires to teach in their summer program. You might want to ask if they hire grad. students or if their faculty teach in the pre-college summer program. I hear Columbia College in Chicago has an excellent and growing photo dept. I don't know if they offer a pre-college program. Good luck!
