pre computer science

First off, lets not argue whether this is engineering or not. I applied at UT Austin and could not find just CS as a major, just pre-CS. What is the difference?

you have to go through pre-CS in order to get to full status CS major. you have to satisfy certain prerequisites in order to promote. usually it takes until end of sophomore yr in order finish the prerequisites. some majors have the "pre" thing and some dont. i dont know why.

(all of this is assuming its like my school. im in pre-CS but i just tell ppl my major is CS. i never say pre-CS.)

So it should still take 4 years to get a BS?

Yes

Wow Wow Wow

I attend UT-Austin and I KNOW there is Computer Science as a major along with the Touring Scholars Honors program.

When I was doing my app all i could find was pre-CS.
btw how do you like UT Austin?

I'm not really sure about this "Pre-CS" major since I currently have many friends under Computer Science and its growing quite quickly (Dell just pledged 60 mill for a new building).

CS should fall under the School of Natural Science.

What application are you using?

Also if your grades are in line, I'd recommend the Touring Scholars Program--its top notch and you'll have tiny classes.

UT-Austin was a good school for me--close to home, very strong academics, great student body and most of all, dirt cheap.

How do I get into the Touring Scholars Program?

I've got a 3.9 uw gpa

So I talked a to a few friends of mine and they had this to say.

Basically you choose Pre-CS and take the basic CS/Math classes your first year and then apply to the CS school to become an official CS major--apparently everyone is accepted.

You could also just apply to Touring's Scholars Program which will automatically make you a CS major. Look under the Honors Programs in Natural Science during the application process.

I already applied so looks like it's too late. Ill have to see if I can get it changed. Thanks a lot for the info.

No, you did it right. You apply under the regular Texas common app for pre-CS, but you also submit an honors scholarship app for Computer Science. You still have time to submit the honors app (as a Turing Scholar) -- the deadline is February 1st. If you're accepted as a Turing Scholar (essentially the honors program), then you will be a CS major. Note that you also have to get your teacher recommendation in by this February 1 deadline too.

What?

Oh.
