I am already taking chem 1a and apparently i need to take chem 1b as well, should i take it in the spring or take chem 3a in the spring and chem 1b next year, i heard chem 3a is easier in the spring and im wondering what i should do, thanks a lot for your help

yeah i’d take chem3a in the spring with Frechet, you can also take chem1b in the summer as well

ya but i dont really want to do sumemr courses i mean is chem 3a rly that bad in fall?

if you’re good you’ll do well anyways

but in spring it’s a lot easier, 1000 students, top 300 students get A’s

If you’re taking summer school
Chem 1B, Bio 1B spring '10
Chem 3A/L summer '10 (with Pedersen)
Bio 1A/L fall '10
Chem 3B/L spring '11 (with Pedersen)
MCB 102 fall '11

If you’re not taking summer school
Chem 1B, Bio 1B spring '10
Chem 3A/L fall '10 (with Pedersen)
Chem 3B/L spring '11 (with Pedersen)
Bio 1A/L fall '11
MCB 102 spring '12

where does physics 7A/7B fit in and should i take bio 1b as a freshman?

and isnt it a bit late to take bio 1a in fall '11,

Not quite, when I took Bio 1A/L in Fall '08, 75% of the class was juniors.

Take Bio 1B as a freshman as it opens the door to plenty of biology UDs earlier, giving you more scheduling freedom.

Unless your major requires the 7 series, I would recommend you do Physics 8A either spring your sophomore year

i think pedersen is overrated.

That sounds sketchy. It’s more like 75% sophomores and 25% juniors. These sophomores have just finished Chem 3A and are taking Bio 1A concurrently with Chem 3B.

This depends on your major. Bio 1B for MCB majors is quite possibly one of the most useless and irrelevant classes-- it doesn’t open many doors, if any at all, for upper div MCB classes.

Yes, it is. I don’t see what’s wrong with doing this:

Chem 1B, Bio 1B spring '10
Chem 3A/L fall '10
Chem 3B/L, Bio 1A/L spring '11
MCB 102 fall '12

I remember it clearly, my GSI passed around a pie chart of his three sections, and it showed <75% juniors, < 25% sophomores, and a small number of seniors. Unless his three sections are particularly biased towards juniors, I wouldn’t really see otherwise. A lot of people start on biology major coursework a semester or two late (in most cases due to spring admission), so they end up taking Bio 1A their junior year.

For MCB department courses it doesn’t but for some of your MCB electives it does. Though I am not sure what this person’s major is or if he/she has chosen it yet.

It’s definitely not too late to take Bio 1A in Fall of junior year, there are plenty of juniors who take it. It really depends on your major though to determine if that’s too late or not.

As a MCB major, none of my classes had a pre-req for Bio 1B, but almost all require Bio 1A. If anything, postpone taking Bio 1B if you don’t need to yet and take Bio 1B later (e.g., junior/senior yaer). A lot of people do this actually and are doing perfectly fine in their MCATs (or DAT in your case), upper division courses. The DAT is likely to have more Bio 1A material on it than Bio 1B so make sure you take Bio 1A before you take the DAT.

If you’re not MCB, then you should look at the pre-reqs for the upper divs you are interested in. I don’t know if dental schools require lab courses for physiology/anatomy/etc., but if they do, be an IB major.

im not doin mcb for sure if anything then maybe public health or integrative bio

Bio 1B is a prereq for PH (which is capped), so delaying Bio 1B would indeed be a bad idea for you. But yea, with PH/IB delaying Bio 1A/L isn’t the worst thing in the world.

^to clarify my prior point, Bio 1B is the requirement for declaring, Bio 1A is required for PH, but is not required to declare

You have to complete all your requirements before declaring PH, so that means Bio 1A, unless you want to take 2 or something useless lower div bio classes. You need to complete these requirements and be under 80 units (excluding AP, including cc) to declare so you would likely need to have taken Bio 1A and Bio 1B at the latest spring of sophomore year, but you need the grade in Bio 1B to declare so you should take that in Fall at the latest and Bio 1A/1AL in spring.

Good point.

This user has a slight jam then
their options are to take summer school, to take Bio 1A and Chem 3B in Spring '11 (facing 8am five days a week along with an extremely tough semester), or delay Chem 3B to Fall '11 with Vollhardt
