Sure, I would expect the designers to have such coursework. But I wouldn’t care at all if they took those courses as part of an accredited BS program, or as part of an accredited MS program.
Through this discussion, the OP has heard that:
- Williams offers combined degree programs with Dartmouth and Columbia for engineering, and these take more than four years to complete (and are applied to during college),
- Some people attend masters and PhD programs after four years at Williams as a science major, but some professional engineers who are posting here believe that may not be an advisable course of action and that an undergraduate background in engineering is important, and
- There are many smaller colleges, including both technical schools and liberal arts colleges, that offer engineering majors, whereas Williams does not.
OP, you have a good amount of information now. You might ask Williams if you can speak with a student who went through the combined degree program, or someone who went on to get an engineering degree afterwards, or a pre-engineering advisor. And you might look into some of the other colleges that were suggested to you— colleges that combine a small school environment with an engineering major.
Good luck, OP!
