Pre Freshman Year Summer

I’m opening this to talk about any opportunities students can take the summer before freshman year of college. I’d love to know about any recommended internships or summer language immersion programs that offer scholarships.

Our kids worked the summer before freshman year of college. If they hadn’t done so, they would have had NO spending money.

If you want a language immersion program, I believe Middlebury offers a HS one. But it’s expensive and I’m not sure scholarships are readily available.

RE: internships…unless your HS grad has some unique skill, this would be unlikely. A regular job would be more likely.

DS had a regular seasonal job. Earned some money, had a boss and co-workers. The latter included students, teachers, and day laborers. I think he learned some practical skills and some important workplace lessons as well. And the value of a dollar wasn’t lost on him either - he quickly learned that the cost of lunch at the local deli was the equivalent of an hour’s work; brown bagging it became appealing.

FWIW, I think this was preferable to anything academic for that summer.
