is this something parents go to or just the pre-frosh?

It's really just for the prefrosh, though many parents do accompany their children. We sleep on campus in a host's dorm room, and are given a meal card for use during the weekend. We attend classes, go to open houses, and basically bum around and make friends, from what I've seen. I don't know how interesting it will be for parents... hotels in Cambridge are pretty pricey, so...

(One quote I saw from a faculty member re: CPW was something to the effect of "We try to keep the parents entertained.")

LSA - thanks for the links. Sounds awesome!

CPW was a great time. I would definitely try and come. My Mom came and had a great time. She stayed in the Marriot hotel which is right by the Kendall T-stop on the north-east side of campus, kinda close to EC (which is where I was temped it so happened). Try and make it to CPW, you won't regret it!

I second the Marriott. It's across the street from campus and for orientation they had a very decent discount for MIT parents.

What's the point of parents coming to CPW? My S is hinting strongly that he doesn't want us to come, but I could be convinced either way. What do parents do during that time? If we've already visited campus and are suitable informed, would it be a relative waste of time?

My son ended up not being able to attend CPW, but my husband was planning on attending with him. I seem to remember there were some activities planned for parents. His main reason for going was to see the campus, talk to the financial aid people, and get a feel for the school. He figured if he was going to be spending that much money, he wanted to see what kind of education, experience and opportunities our son would have there. He ended up having to do that at orientation, but would have liked to have done it earlier.
Our son was planning on staying on campus and never seeing his dad that week-end. They were going to take an extra day and see some of Boston.

"Our son was planning on staying on campus and never seeing his dad that week-end."

That's the plan for our family too. My husband and I will stay at a hotel while our son stays on campus. We told him we'll pretend we don't know him if we bump into him. We even offered to travel on a different flight. In addition to the points Over30 mentions, it sounds like a fun weekend and I would like to see it, if only peripherally.

Have any of the parents planning to attend CPW visited the campus before? I am trying to judge whether it's worth traveling from CA for the festivities when I've already seen the facilities and know the area decently well. Thanks.

Well I'm a mom from CA and I'm going to go with my son. Even though I've been to MIT this summer, it sounds like fun. Now that I know my son is accepted I can look at MIT in a different light. I can ask the questions that I didn't ask before (didn't want to jinx his acceptance you know.) Besides I just need a little vacation. Last time I was there I saw almost nothing of Boston.

Perhaps the CC parents can meet over dinner!

I'm up for dinner! (how about Legal Seafood?) My husband and I are going in spite of having been to the area 3 years ago. I love Boston. But I could certainly understand not going. From the links LSA provided, it seems like about half of the students at CPW have a parent along and half don't. It's fairly easy for my family to go. I certainly wouldn't go if it was going to be a financial strain or jeopardize my job.

CC kids should also meet somewhere. I guess we'll set that up after the Regular Action folks receive their decisions. ;)

My parents will probably come for a tour or just to walk around a bit before handing their precious daughter over to the school. And since I know all my dad's going to do is talk about how much prettier and greener connecticut college/wesleyan/[insert LAC within a 100 mile radius of my house completely lacking in science department] is than MIT, I probably won't stick around them too much. Though I might give them a mini tour based on what I know about the school. Who knows, maybe they might even be impressed enough to forgive me for never sending in that Wesleyan application. :) We live within driving distance, so they will probably go home that night and then either come to pick me up when it's all done, or hand me a few train tickets home.

does anyone know how much this costs to go to. i hope i will be able to afford to go (probably have to pay for myself like always)

It's free, but you have to get there somehow :)

ill hitchhike...haha

Mootmon, I had visited campus on a whirlwind northeast campus tour over spring break. We did spend an entire day at MIT and I just didn't see any reason for me to visit again, particularly since I ended up going to orientation.

I thought it was just pre-frosh

kgordon, apparently there are supplemental activities for parents of pre-frosh, but from what I can tell there isn't any "mixing" of the two groups, never fear. ;-)
