I know it's still in progress, but does anyone have any reports from Prefrosh Week-end?

ah it's quite fun! weather's so nice and it's been awesome chillin with all the ppl from my house and other prefrosh

My son ran into friends before we got out of the car. We saw him three days later, he had a blast. He attended many classes and roundtables, toured the labs, and met with professors and grad students.

On Thursday, we attended opening session. In the evening, Caltech had a very nice parent reception in the garden of a beautiful old house across the street from the campus. They had a display of their new Darpa Challenge vechicle (most impressive).

On Friday, we (my husband and myself) went to the parent, parent/student lectures (Fin. Aid, SURF, etc,) which were small and informative. They had a lovely lunch for parents in one of the courtyards, while students lunched with their hosts in a big tent on the Beckman lawn. At night, we attended a performance by an Asian dance troope in the Beckman auditorium.

This morning, we all (found my son) toured the student housing and the new modular unit. We spoke to many students in the houses. I bought some t-shirts. We were all so tired by 2:00 we decided to forgo the evening barbque and head home.

I don't think my son had more than six hours sleep in three days. This made it a total success in his eyes.

We confirmed to ourselves what a great school Caltech is. We were worried about a CS related question but that is no longer a problem. Weather was sunny. That's all I can think of now. A great time was had by everyone.

Texas-Did your son attend Prefrosh weekend?

Yes. He'll be home this afternoon. Unfortunately, husband and I were unable to go (the main reason I started this thread). Sounds like there was more for parents to do than I was guessing! Hope to get some juice in a few hours, although if he's only had 6 hours of sleep he may leave us dangling until tomorrow.

Bookworm - No, the shirts were not for sale. However, I was able to get one from an administrator. There were a few prefrosh that had them on this weekend. My son told me if someone broke a rule at one of the house dinners, such as wearing an MIT shirt, the closest undergrad would get a bucket of cold water poured over there head.

Texas - Too bad you could not attend. You did attend MIT's, I believe? I did find out things that I was unaware of. You'll have to relate his experience to us when you get the info.

I also found out not to leave my younger son alone in a hotel. At checkout, we found he had racked up quite a movie bill.

Actually, the shirts were on sale during the Club Fair--they were being sold at the table marked "Caltech 4-Square Club" and "MIT Printscreening Club." Perhaps "given as a gift for a set donation" is more accurate...

To those of you that I met, who recognized me from on here - it was a pleasure to meet all of you. And to all the prospective students/parents who made it, I hope you had a great time!

To those from here that were there, who I may have met but not recognized, I was the guy with the nametag that said "Pope John Paul II, Bishop of Rome". Hello.
