Pre-Haas freshman EC help!

So right now I'm thinking of doing either pre-haas or Econ+Math. However, my EC last semester is basically empty. I feel I really need to be more involved in business clubs. I have my eyes down to several clubs. For the general one: ABA IABC and PBL. I heard IABC has a better reputation? For skill-wised one, I really wanna join the Berkeley group. But I don't have any consulting experience and don't know how to do case practice... So... Please give me any advice? What should I do? If I want to join the Berkeley group, do I have to read a lot of consulting wise books? I'm really lost right now... Thanks!

I know some people in TBG that didn’t have consulting experience going in. As a result, they got ask questions to test how they thought. Brain teasers/etc. They want out of the box type people. They teach you a lot of what you need to know. If you go onto callisto, you should read some of the vault guides. They give you some background.

I’m in Phi Gamma Nu, one of the business fraternities on Campus. Best decision ever, because its small enough to really give you the social exposure of being in a fraternity. But its also professional, and because we’re so small, a lot of our younger brothers have leadership positions. We do office tours, resume critiques, etc. Pretty much all of us are aligned with the company we wanna work for: PwC, KPMG, Ernst and Young, Google, Deloitte Consulting, Disney, etc.

IABC has a good reputation, I’d check them out. I’ve heard some bad things about ABA. Its just too big, and there are too few positions, and usually positions are given to people who come from similar high schools, etc.

Oh; Here’s the link to spring rush for PGN if you want to check it out:

BAP and AKPSI have their event on the same day, so you may wanna plan your time out, and look for fit amongst the different frats.

Thanks for the reply! Phi gamma nu is a relatively new bus frat right? I’m definitely interested in joining a bus frat but I want to join one of them when Im a sophomore. I really want to do something impressive this semester so I will have better chance for rush next semester. Could you suggest some EC I should be involved other than business club? Also, is IABC selective? I don’t have related business background so I’m worried for the interview.

Thanks so much!

PGN is new: Fall 2010. In all honesty, I’d try rushing this semester, If you don’t get into the frat you want, you can rush again. Your odds go up, and you really learn about the process. If you want, rush a frat you aren’t interested in, just to learn about the process, how to talk to people, and see what type of interview questions are being asked. If you get a bid, you can always turn it down (But then don’t expect to get a bid again if you rush again). Also, it may not be the best Idea to pledge the same semester you have to apply to haas. Especially a frat like DSP: God…

I’m in Berkeley women in Business as well. PGN’s president is in IABC: which has a general membership option. So does Asian Business Association. Other things you could get involved in are service organizations. VITA does volunteer tax preparation, but I think its too late for that. Haas has some programs that involved tutoring local Berkeley kids.

If I were you, I’d go on Callisto, go to job search. Select “interviews I qualify for” and see what type of freshmen programs different companies are doing. One my of Fraternity brothers did Google’s BOLD immersion program, so she’s now a finalist in their regular internship program. Deloitte and PwC Have some stuff as well.
