First of all, here are the classes that I’m planning to take for my first semester at Cal:
ASAMST 20AC
Math 16A
German R5A
Nutri Sci 10
After seeing others with more “rigorous” schedules per se (and yes, I know that it may heavily depend on your major, but still), is my schedule a bit to “easy”? Now, by no means am I saying that I’ll ace these classes with no problem, but it does seem like I’m giving myself an easy time. I’m pre-haas, myback up major is Econ, and my plans for after college would be to pursue a MBA (some background info if that helps any bit).
To those who have more knowledge about the pre-haas track, am I just overthinking or should I tackle on some more pre-reqs or change up my schedule in any way?
P.S Does haas undergrad admissions consider course rigor? If so, how do they judge that?
Is this the schedule that your Haas adviser recommend to you?
Honestly it looks normal for a freshman’s fall semester. The goal isn’t really to kill yourself. If you were accepted pre-Haas, you’re going to get into Haas as long as you listen to your adviser and keep your grades acceptable.
Also, keep in mind Economics is also a capped major. If you end up needing a backup to Haas, I honestly don’t know if Econ will accept you. Oh and when it comes time to take your intermediate micro/macro course, remember that UGBA 101A cannot be used to fulfill the micro requirement.
@Burdened Thanks for the feedback!
To some degree, yeah. She recommended me to take Math 16A, a R&C, and two breadths.
What do you mean by being “accepted pre-Haas”? The major that I listed on my UC app was pre-business administration (aka pre-haas), but I’m pretty sure everyone is officially considered undeclared as freshman if you’re accepted into L&S.
https://www.econ.berkeley.edu/undergrad/prospective describes admission to the economics major.
You should consider the requirements for any other major of interest. Note that some majors may require Math 1A instead of 16A.
@Burdened “If you were accepted pre-Haas, you’re going to get into Haas as long as you listen to your adviser and keep your grades acceptable.”
Anyone can get declare Pre-Haas, it just means a student is working towards the pre-reqs for Haas with the intent to apply. Roughly half (I believe) of Pre-Haas students are accepted to Haas. It’s very competitive and a lot don’t make it.
@briank82 I’m aware. However, I make the distinction because a lot of students who use the “I’ll declare Haas when I get there” usually are the ones that don’t make it. The thing about Haas, and in my opinion, Cal as a whole, a lot of students don’t really know how they rank relative to the other students and it’s after a few semesters of getting decimated by or decimating tough curves do they know how they stand. For competitive, capped majors like UGBA and econ, a lot of people don’t make it. Unfortunately, I also don’t think it’s right to doom and gloom freshmen especially into taking extra-hard and rigorous schedules to “edge over” when honestly it’s your lower division GPA that will be the deciding factor when you declare.
I understand your point, however, and I was being a bit intentionally misleading. But, I do think listening to your adviser and getting the best grades you can really are the best advice possible for someone in the position of @berkeleyhelppls. A properly planned and thought-out back-up plan are important as well, of course.
