It sounds like the majority of bruins are pre-med or something else pre-health related, how is it really over there at UCLA? Is it really crazy(stressful, competitive etc)? Is anyone here a pre-med/pre-vet/pre-dental? Can anyone tell me how their experience is over there?
I'd love to hear what you guys have to say, thanks.

there are alot of intelligent and motivated students here

just dont bite off more than you can chew on and you will be fine. upper classmen have been telling me how burned out they were after their first quarter here in the sciences. some of them switched to north campus majors

I hear people talk about mcat and medical schools everyday. yes, EVERYDAY. If you attend a meeting of a pre-health/health related club, you will see people competing to sign up for the trainings of measuring blood glucose/cholesterol/whatever, since they need that kind of experiences to apply for medical schools. If you enroll in a lab course and mess up your future-medical-student lab partner's experiment, you will be fed and he/she will tell all his/her friends how useless you are. They are so irritable. There was a girl who is a pre-health major and she couldn't add a course during registration, she said f for over 10 times. Life goes so pathetic since they need A+ for every courses.

I wonder what drive people want to be MDs so madly. Sometimes being a doctor isn't that great. If you carelessly hurt yourself during a surgery, and that patient had AIDS, your life would be done.

Hey shirleyxY, just wondering: are you talking about APHC when it comes to those blood glucose/cholesterol trainings?

As for pre-meds, there IS competition here, but in my experience, it's more like the competition is not affecting you directly; i.e., competitive people setting the curve in a course, but not giving you the wrong answers deliberately or trying to mess up your lab experiments.

yes. I saw lots of people singing up for something while I was waiting for the start of another meeting. People were so crazy that I thought there were a big lucky draw for iMacs or plasma TVs. So I went inside and asked and it disappointed me.

I'm not talking about they mess up my experiements. I mean the opposite. I hear those future-medical students f*** their lab partners because the lab results were not good.

Yeah that's what I heard about pre meds at UCLA, from friends who go to UCLA. They say the pre meds/healths there are extremely competitive, and some can be very unhelpful, like what you said.

Hearing all about this makes me scared.
But I've had friends who did not do so well and struggled in their community college science classes, but once they got to UCLA, they got so motived and were on dean's honors list for some consecutive quarters.

its not that bad. its not easy, but its also definately possible. im doing fairly decent in bio and chem this quarter. there are a ton of premeds, but you'll find that at all the UC's. I haven't been at LA for too long, but my bio lab doesn't seem that bad. One other word of advice, i try my hardest not to interact too much with other prehealth students. Most of my friends are bizecon and prelaw. I would never in my right mind join the premed society. Being near premeds stresses me out. anyways, don't not come to UCLA and go to other UC's because you think the premed competition is too hard, because some places like SD, Irvine, Cal are even worse

being a doctor isnt even that great these days... the money isn't what it used to be, huge malpractice issues, incredible loans for med school (unless you're already rich), and the nearly impossible path to get there, unless you're extremely motivated or a math/sci genius.

"One other word of advice, i try my hardest not to interact too much with other prehealth students."

this is exactly how i feel. some are pretty cool, but some can be very annoying

I loved the extreme competition in LS 1... So many Asian students sitting together in the front row, comparing notes 15-20 minutes before lecture even started...

Comparing notes is less annoying. There are more annoying things about these Dr wannabe. As I told you guys before, they just bug the TAs and don't let other people ask questions during tutorial.

Gee it sure sounds annoying being in those science classes!

I find it funny how everyone only looks at the negatives of being a doctor. Sure, there are plenty of negatives, but if you only look at the negatives: not enough money, malpractice cost hikes, etc, then you'll never see the positives of a career in medicine, which there are plenty of.

Yes, getting into medical school is competitive, but aren't all things worthwhile supposed to be challenging and competitive?

All the premeds that I've met so far are very nice and friendly, maybe those crazies are out there, but I haven't met any yet. Thank god for that :)

oh yeah, not everyone in pre-health is premed.

best thing to do in those premed classes (bio,chem...) just sit in the back row so you aren't distracted by ***hole premeds who keep bugging you for help or the ones that are constantly talking to each other about how easy the class is to them. The worst of the bunch are the ones who ask you randomly "do you want to be a doctor?" most annoying question ever.
