Pre-Journalism at Missouri-Columbia?!

Hi everyone!

I am an international student, planning to start university in Spring 2010. I wasn't planning to study in the States until recently and I missed the deadlines for the Fall Semester. Because I wasn't planning to do so before, I didn't take the SAT, only TOEFL.

Yesterday, I contacted the UMC admissions office and they told me that my scores are high enough to get admission for a Pre-Journalism major and I would be admitted directly to Journalism school if I have an SAT score higher then 1290 or finished in the Top 10 % of the high school class (which I did, but I can't prove it since we have no ranking system here)

So, if I want to start in Spring, then I'd have to take Pre-Journalism. It writes in their website that you can get admitted to the Journalism School after taking 61 credit hours and of course having a high GPA (but they say that it's not guaranteed, it depends on the space availability). Now, I don't know what to do. Should I enroll at the preparatory Journalism school or is it too risky?! I heard the University of Missouri is one of the top schools in the nation when it comes to Journalism, so I really want to go, but I don't know if it would be a smart decision.

What are your thoughts?

Mizzou is a GREAT school for journalism! I consider it one of the top schools in the USA. I would def. go there and it’s an ok school overall. It’s not Ivy type, but decent state school. They’re known for the journalism school. You may also want to look at Northwestern, they have a program where you get a BA/MA in only 4 years in journalism. It may be too late for that though, good luck.

PS- I want to be a print journalist and have researched a lot of j schools. I just don’t like the location of Mizzou much though. I rather be in LA, NY or Chicago.

The University of Kansas outperformed both Mizzou and Northwestern in Hearst awards this year. No one talks much about Kansas, but it is routinely listed as one of the top j-schools as well. It isn’t too far from Kansas City.
