when we meet our advisor in Sept., is it a drop-in kind of thing? or do we have to register for an appointment?

I think you will get to meet with your advisor during orientation, but I could be wrong. Anyways, just wait for orientation =)

for the advisor meetings, they suggest setting up an appointment. there's always a deadline before which you have to meet with them, and you'll get plenty of notice about it in some sort of email or letter. you'll also get the number of the advisor's office so you can set up an appt in advance. you can drop in too, but this is usually just the people who wait until the last minute and end up having to wait a while. it's definitely worth taking the 3 minutes to call and make an appointment. the meetings themself are pretty informal, or at least have been for me, and lasted about 15 minutes max. and yes, the first deadline is towards the end of NSO i think.

dont you have to meet with them to be taken off of registration hold?

If you are a Benjamin Francklin scholar - can you choose your advisor, or do you get assigned a random advisor?

"dont you have to meet with them to be taken off of registration hold?"

yeah that's basically how they force people to meeti with their advisor. sneaky, but it works...unless you're planning on not taking any classes next semester.
