Hi guys, how am I supposed to approach this requirement? Do I need to take bild 1, 2, 3? and an upper division lab to fulfill this? I heard bild 3 is useless for the MCAT because it deals with evolution. If that's the case, then would I take bild 1, bild 2, and an upperdivision course? What course would it be?

Don’t quote me on this because I am not 100 percent sure -
I have AP credit that exempts me from taking the BILD series (I assume it’s the same for you?); and I am also doing pre-med. I asked the academic adviser if I need to take the series to fulfill pre-med requirement, but she said no. She mentioned that upper div class that I will eventually take will satisfy the 1 year bio requirement. I am choosing between a biology and a chemistry major, so I don’t quite exactly remember if it was because of the classes I have to take for biology majors or not.

oh in that case… i am not sure. but according to that thread, it seems like some med school won’t accept your upper division biology course credit to satisfy the 1 year bio requirement unless you had ap credit for bio

Take a couple more biology classes than the BILD series. If you havent been exempted from the BILD series, take just BILD 1 and BILD 2. Then, prepare for the MCAT by taking additional biology classes such as BIBC 102 (metabolic biochemistry), BIPN 100 (mammalian physiology), and BICD 100 (geentics).

BILD 3 is unnecessary if youre not a biology major. The prereqs for mamphys and genetics are just BILD 1 and 2. For biochem, you need chem 140A and B. Nonbiology majors are allowed to enroll in these upperdivision courses. For the lab requirements of most med schools, you need to take at least 1 biology lab. The most common one to take is biochemical techniques BIBC 103.

premed1234, I’m scheduled to take BIBC103 next quarter - is there anything I should expect in terms of difficulty/material? It’s my first bio lab and I’m a little nervous. I passed out of BILD1 but did well in BICD100.

In general, referring to the required biochem classes for certain med schools, is there a general number on how many courses of biochem?

also does 20f count towards the math requirement? i took math20b and math20c and i need one more calculus courses but it’s called “linear algebra” sorry if this is a dumb question…

momosky, the class in general is not that hard. they were really similar to AP bio labs for me but in more depth. topics such as spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, ect. The lectures and labs were long, but I definitely thought chem and ochem lab required more work. There aren’t many med schools with biochemistry requirements. the ones that do such as johns hopkins only require 1 biochem class. I took metabolic biochemistry, and that will suffice. But even taking structural biochemistry or the biochemistry courses in the chemistry department is fine as well.

chismoso, that’s not a dumb question. im pretty sure almost all med schools will exempt the math requirement if u had AP credits. it’s not bad taking more math classes, but PSYC 60 or Math 11 will be more helpful. Most med schools recommend students take a statistics class. I myself took 20C, 20F, and PSYC 60. While F was pretty easy, it definitely was a waste of time learning eigenvalues and vector spaces and all that bs. it’s not even calculus for the matter. Just take Math 11 or PSYC 60, and you’re good.
