How is pre-med advising at WashU and how helpful is the administration for preparing students for the MCAT and med school interviews? What is the med school acceptance rate? Daughter is trying to decide between Rice and WashU. She has visited them both and likes both. Any suggestions?

I can't answer your question directly. Here's something else you may think about: their University Scholars program in which you are gauranteed a spot in the med school when you apply as freshman. then you can skip all the interviews and the MCAT but it's very tough to get into.

I just attended a premed seminar on campus 2 days ago, and the head adviser ran it. I was very impressed by how well they have premed opportunities planned out! It seems like they truly make every effort to make things happen only when the student proposes his/her plans and goals. I felt that this is probably the most logical way of running things because it lets the students run their own lives, but offers the support of the premed advisers throughout the process.

The adviser focused on many medical research opps, study abroad programs for medicine specifically, and the specific class requirements that are essential for most med schools and to be well-prepared for the MCAT. WashU students in general have higher MCAT scores because their premed program requires 3 bios vs 2 as most schools. Also, the chem classes are rigorous but they ensure higher performance on the chemistry sections of the MCAT.

As far as percentages, the premed adviser put it this way: If you have at least a 31 MCAT and a 3.5 gpa your med school acceptance rate is >90%. If you have around a 26-27 MCAT and a 3.2 gpa, your med school acceptance rate is still >80%.

The advisers have conferences with all premed students to edit personal statements, plan for med school interviews, etc. Also, she mentioned that advisers keep in contact with med schools to continually improve their advising.

All-in-all I was very happy with the interest that the advisers take in all their premed students. I don't know much about Rice's premed, but I do know that WashU takes great interest in its premeds and consequently has a very high success rate.

AAAHHHH.. i missed that premed meeting, i'm so ****ed; i went to the Thurtene Carnival instead. Oh well, the last three days (minus yesterday) have been one of the best days of my life :]

WashU '11!

Shobhit...Don't worry about missing that meeting...during freshman orientation they'll most likely have another one...or two..or three...: )

Actually I think I gave you most of the information you need, but like eleph says, there will be many more such sessions to come. Cya there!
