Pre-Med and Business Major?

So I’m currently in the process of choosing my colleges, and I’ve been thinking seriously about medical school. I know that you can pretty much major in anything before going to med school as long as you maintain good credentials.

Because I am not 100% sure about med school, I want to major in business so I can have something to fall back on. I also really like the business classes I’ve taken, and I just want to major in it, even if I don’t go to medical school.

I am interested in business and considering a major in either finance or accounting. Maybe both. I want to have a manageable workload, so I can fulfill my pre-med requirements.

I am trying to decide between:

  1. Finance
  2. Finance and Accounting
  3. Finance/Accounting and IT
  4. Finance/Accounting and SCM
  5. Finance/Accounting and Psychology
  6. Finance/Accounting and Economics
  7. Finance with a minor in Computer Science

I wanted to know which of the majors/ double majors would provide me with a stable career and good, solid income. IS THERE A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE TO DOUBLE MAJORING IN THE BUSINESS FIELD?

Thinking very seriously about going to either IU or UIUC. Most probably will be going to UIUC.

Thanks for the help!

Typically b-schools have a pretty significant core curriculum to fulfill as well as the requirements for your specific major and any liberal arts core requirements. You first need to assess if it would be possible to fulfill all of the requirements for a business school degree while still fitting in all of your pre-med requirements.

If you can and do go the b-school route, there is no reason at all to pick a major now. There is no advantage to declaring a major before the end of sophomore year. As I noted, there is a large core curriculum in business school and you need to take intro classes in a variety of disciplines such as accounting, finance, economics, IT etc. I would suggest you take classes and see where your interests and aptitudes lie before choosing a major. I doubt you can double major in business and still fulfill your pre-med requirements. If you go the accounting route, there is really no advantage to double majoring (although you do need 150 credits to get a CPA so many students go on for a one year MS degree to fulfill that requirement)…
